383 Q&a
This is mostly for people with a 383 already installed
Can a 383 pass emissions?
How much MPG does a 383 Have?
Can you drive a car with a 383 farther then 1/4 mile? (without overheating in slow traffic)
Does this add to the bull sh*t of insurance policies? (engine swaps in general)
Can you drive in rain?

carb or fuel injection?
why would it overheat? it just has a longer stroke it's still not as big as a 400 is so heat shouldn't be an issue
why would you ever tell your car insurence company you put a bigger engine in your ride my insurence company thinks my car has a stock 305 in it :lala:
again why would you not be able to drive in the rain?
only problem with a 383 is increased clynder wall pressure in theory a 383 will round out the cylnder walls quicker causeing the pistant to flop around causing compression loss. i'm hoping this isn't the case since i have a 383 and hope to get 170,000+ miles out of it.

- Yes.
- That depends on the build.
- Yes.
- Not if they don't know.

Most insurance companies have a whole group of people employed just to screw you over and find any reason not to pay for you accident
I thought the increase torque would cause a problem with traction or is that just because tire will wear faster?

i'm probably going to get burnd for saying this but don't buy a l98 unless you want to run 14's for the rest of your life.
you would be better off with engine that can push some serious hp
if you're going fuel injection a 400sb with a superram and a mild cam with dual cats can pass emissions in ill..

lol, I'd say look at that operation ralley stroker....build a 38x LT1
You can get LT1's for as low as $1000 and as high as $2500 depending on miles, condition, and the biggest difference, who's selling it. If you get the LT1 though make sure everything is there and in good condition. I got mine missing the MAF, and PCM which I got shipped out to me, but also the underhood fusebox was missing, I have spent $50 buying inline fuses and new relays....now it looks like I have to buy fan relays on top of everything....
Then put in the LT4 Hot Cam Kit including the HD timing. You'll be pushing btw 400-450 HP. Want more, get a cam rated to higher RPMS, the heavy duty timing kit is rated to 9000 RPM!

whats the cost of a 350 top 383 swap.. whats it goign to cost to get the 400 crankshaft to fix? i already have a 305 and i'm dropping in a 350 next week. what i want to know is do i have to bore the motor? if what how much (0.30?) and how could you get a 383 with a holley carb and no emission other then the cat to pass? my guess would be with high compression??? any idea?

you're going to need fuel injection with emissions equitment to pass on a motor of that size.
and yeah a 383 is a 350 block bored .30 with a 400 crank you're going to need to grind down the block to get the crank/rods to spin freely. i don't know the cost my buddy did it for free. then you need to get it balanced.
off topic: btw i've seen you before guess from where?

You can use whatever rods you want to on a 383. 6" just causes more issues than using a 5.7" rod.
