Help me decide my engine swap....

I'm planning on turning my 305 TBI / Auto

INTO

350 TPI with a T56 Transmission....

I also plan to add a 4th Gen rear end & gas tank......

Can this ALL be done for under $5,000 or am i dreaming?

Any suggestions, comments, or such?

Depends on the engine mods. 4th gen rears can be had fairly cheap. I am considering a 4th gen tank also. I do not know if the thirdgen fuel complex will fit into the tank. The 4th gen setup is different.

My guess would be yes buy by a slim margin.

What exactly is the point in putting a 4th gen gas tank in??? I know that all 4th gen rear ends are about 1 1/2" longer on each end.....so wider tires is now feasable. T56 would run....2000 from D&D Performance, of course a used one would be a better bet. Complete TPI can be had for under 1000, just gotta look in the right place. So I would say yes...it is feasable to do it for 5000. Just make sure you watch those nickel and dime pieces, they add up quick. Plus it also depends on what you get done to the engine. You want speed....you're gonna want to put on new heads and cam and intake. You want daily driving power....just throw the stock TPI in.

It could definitely be done. I would say the complete engine/tranny swap shouldn't cost any more than $4000 total, that leaves you another grand for a $200 rear end and however much the tank is, can't be too much.

Link to the answers

looks like :
93-98 = 15.5gal
99-02 = 16.8gal

I'm not sure which years (if not all) have the plastic tanks, will do another search.

edit:

TexasLT1, please tell me you didn't crossover to the darkside

edit 2: other link, back to here

The TPI swap requires the fuel pump to be changed, so no sense in putting that old fuel tank back in there.....

Thanks for the input...

What's the going price on a used 350 TPI or what's reasonable?

If you are having someone do the install, it will cost more then 5 grand.

For a high milage TPI 350, 1-1400 is the norm.

A used T-56 is the cheapest route.
