427 90RS Camaro "ZL-1" Read on.......

There is A Guy i work with who is wanting to put a 427 chevy in a 1990 RS with the 454 TBI set up and throw some shiney ZL-1 bandage's on it.

I was like if you was going For the ZL-1 Third gen you Wouln't want to badage it As ZL-1's weren't badaged......

he wants to know if the 454 TBI setup can be made to power his 427Rat RS???

Any good info i wll pass along.....

He!! no, he will choke that engine with anything less then a 4 barrel carb or the 4bbl commander 950tbi if he really wants to use that.

It won't work, at least if he wants to produce a lot of power. Personally I don't agree with badging it as a ZL-1, or anything for that matter, but then I don't like clones (not that this would even be a clone). In my book this is the same thing as badging a 3rd gen as an SS when no such thing ever come out of the factory (or was even entertained as a thought), but that's just MO, to each his own...

Tell Me about it.................................

AnyWho He want's to Run a TBI injected 427.......
in hie RS so any idea on what C/R or cam ect...

some spec's would be a Big help.....

he is going to Run a 4spd manual, And 4.56 gear's........

So he Want's to know how to setup the 427.

He want's to get One them AL block's From Gm he called on one But they Want $25,000 For an AL427 .

I was thinging with street roddering it he'd be happyer with the cast Iron And it would be Much cheaper.....

My thinking was:

get AL. Head's, AL intake,And paint the block grey it will have and good enough Look wedged in a third gen you won't see much block any way so who would no....

I'd rather him use a 1 of 2Million 427's Like the Truck Block there.

Instead of some Crate ZL-1.......

Well anywho......

CAM, C/R, Head's ect and so to make a 427 couple up nicely to a 4spd,4.56 geared RS.

It's just a street Rod an In town only car.....
a Race last all of a 1/10Th of mile if that.....

just a nice 0-45Mph 0-50 Mph 0-70 Mph.....

He's geard for it but I would think you'd Need much Engine To be fast..A 305 2bbl TBI would Make enough power to launch And with that setup.......

But he want's a 427BBC.......

He want's to have more power then stock mildy choppy idle and a 4750-%250 rpm shfit point zone. Nice fast bang bang bang bang All done setup.......

Personally i think dude's nut's but It's his car And money Not mine....

why not do a 427 SBC? easier to do, more room, better performance, less weight gained, and more true of a late model ZL1 to have a fire breathing EFI small block, than a mild BBC

Thats what i trted to tell him if there ever was a,
third gen ZL-1,they would have used a a 427sbc.....

He's all hell bent on his 427bbc.......

He is one stubberen S O B.................

he want's his drive line to look like this.

1990 "RS/ZL-1":

427BBC 4SPD 4.56 Gears 305/40R16 Drag radail's.

he went as afer as to Build a full frame under it.
He dropped the sub frame's put duplicated them only concetin them as one solid frame put car body back it car sit's about 1/2"lower then stock. But it's solid....

No give at all.......

he used to have an LT-5 in it .

car flew but he's whined it to 8,500- 9,000rpm all the time and it blew up. it lived 3 year's tho but it blew up.

so now he want's the 427bbc 4spd setup.........

He he, i love that guy already. You tell him to stick with the big block. Tell him if he wants to spend the money, got with a roller cam, edelbrock alum oval ports and a victor intake. AS the cam shoul be a faily mild, around 230 at .050" and say .550 lift with roller lifters. 10.5:1 compression, good for 92 and even lower if he wants to. that would be ood enough for around 550 hp and a nice idle with tons of torque an power. Wil have anough vacumn for everyting he wants to run to. TEll him to stick with his gut. It doesnt have to be al alumninum, as he is not going todrag it so there is no big worry.

I'm thinking 4.56 gears will be a bit much for it, they'll bring the rpm's way up. 4.11's would be better IMO. 4.11's are pretty short in the first place, and the big block will make tons of low end tq so there's not need to rev it to the moon. I defintely wouldn't go with an aluminum big block in a street machine (even if it is hot street), iron will do fine and will be much nicer on the pocketbook. I think what chev496 mentioned above would make a good setup.
