Will it hurt the engine?
Ok I've got a fresh build engine here. I am wondering if its going to be a problem for me to start the engine up to make sure the carb is tuned right, and the timing is right without the car being broke in yet?
I need to make sure everything is in working order before taking it out and breaking it in, so any info would be very valuable! Thanks alot!
Oh yah, how do you bleed fuel lines?
thanks!

oh hey look at that! what did the poster mean about the oil reference is incorect? Also my engine is flat tappet, so I would need to run it for a half hour above 1500 RPM. Makes sense.
cheers and thanks much for the reply!

An arguement could also be made for using straight-weight oil instead of multi-viscosity for break-in. Notice they aren't specific about the oil to use until they get to the part where you start driving it.

If it has oil you're okay. Just don't use synthetics until several thousand miles has passed.
The only thing that really needs to be 'broken in' is the cam. Run the engine above 2000 rpm for 30 minutes and vary the engine speed now and then. The cam should already has break-in lube applied. You should change the oil and filter after the initial 30 minute startup to get rid of the lube and make sure you don't have metal chunks in the oil.
The rings are already seated before you hit the road. You're best off to drive pretty easy for the first 500 miles. Stop and go traffic is best so the engine load and speed varies.
