Pulling 350TPI from '92 Formula

Allright...here's my situation.

I have a 1992 Firebird Formula with the L98 in it. It was wrecked three weeks ago, but the drivetrain remained untouched. I also have a 1972 Nova with no engine/transmission. How would I go about removing the 350 from my bird withOUT disassembling it?

Looked up the procedure in Chiltons and Haynes manuals.....both so to remove this, remove that, take off the air condition compressor, etc etc. But from my understanding, they are assuming you're going to rebuild the engine, in which case you'd have to disassemble it anyway. But in my case, I won't be disassembling it. So I ask...what is the proper was to remove the engine without taking it apart......I'd also like to keep the transmission attached, iff possible.

I also would like to know where to attach the chains to pull the engine out....can'e use a lift plate because the TPI system uses a different intake manifold than what a puller plate is used for.

Any help is appreciated. I'd especially like a website or book that has complete instructions. I've already bought a book on putting a 350TPI into a Nova, but I do not know if it covers removing the engine from the donor car.

Again, any and all help is highly appreciated.

Thanks!
Evan

You aren't going to find anything that specific, I'm afraid.

Basically, you want to disconnect as little as possible, and label everything you disconnect. Take off coolant hoses, air inlet, throttle cables, exhaust from the manifolds, tranny cooler lines, power steering, AC, distributor cap, fuel lines, etc. For the electrics, take off the passenger side fender liner and remove the harness pass-through connector, then remove everything connected to it from the car, and drap it all over the engine. Connect a chain from the back half of the engine from a couple of intake manifold bolts (you might be best advised to remove the plenum and runners, and the harness with it). Disconnect the transmission mounts, shifter cable and driveshaft/torque arm. Hook up the hoist (a tilt sling will make it much, much easier), remove the front mount bolts, start lifting it out and make sure you have everything loose as you go.

A TPI Nova sounds pretty cool to me. You'll need the ECM out of the 'Bird, and probably a harness from Painless to help make it all easier (maybe not, though). You're going to need a high pressure fuel pump back at the tank, vehicle speed sensor, things like that to make it work in the Nova. It's not straight-forward, necessarily, but worthwhile.

I was planning on using everything I can from the bird. Maybe even the chole car harness, because most of the wires in the Nova are shot. In other words, I am trying to take eveything out from under the bird and conform it into a much lighter chassis (Nova). As is, two people can pick up and roll the Nova. Add 700+- lb for the engine+transmission, plus driveshaft, wheels and tires, gas tank, wires, etc. Should be around 2500lbs I'm guessing. That's a thousand pounds lighter the the firebird. And if 100lb = .10 in the quarter taken off.......well then!

From what you said, I don't have to take off every external component, just the lines? That's easy enough. Thanks for your insight!

More help/advice is still greatly appreciated!
