I currently have a 89 2.8 RS Camaro that is in hunger for the 350 sitting in my garage, but first a few questions.

Can I use the 700R4 tranny if I just swap out the bellhousing?

What is the difference in the rear ends? (2.8 vs 5.0)

Can I use the stock computer?

Where can I get aftermarket engine mounts?

This is my first engine swap and I want to do it right the first time.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Welcome aboard.

You can't swap out a TH700R-4 bellhousing.

There is no difference between V6 and V8 rear ends. The V6's often had "better" gears for V8 performance, but that's all.

You can use the stock V8 computer that came in your factory V8 donor car, yes.

You can get aftermarket engine mounts at most any aftermarket automotive source.

Which one of those questions haven't been answered before?

The bellhousings are totally different between the two. When I did my swap, the only parts that I used from the old tranny was the tailshaft, they are the same. As far as mounts go, I went to autozone and paid 9.99 apiece. That would be your best bet. The V6 computer wont work, you will need the computer out of the V8 car. Its a long road to get it done, but it is well worth it.

Now will the computer from a V8 just plug into the conections that were left from the V6 computer or will I have to change the wiring harness?

yes, and no. From what I understand the v6 wiring harness can be adapted to work with the V8. I have never even tried anything like this. When I did my v6 to v8 I went carb to avoid it. Not everyone has that luxury though. I would say that the easiest, safest, and right way would be to use the wiring harness from the V8 donor car. Its about the only safe way to do it.

To emphasize the two words make all of this so simple:

"Donor car".

Get one that has the transmission and induction type you want. Use what it has that your V6 car doesn't have to install the V8 sitting in your garage.

Heres what I have on the 350

GM Vortec Heads
Keith Black Hypereutectic Pistons
Crane Cam 282-282 duration
Summit Stage II rods
Edelbrock performer vortec intake
Summit 383 Stroker crank
Crane rockers 1.6 ratio
Speed Demon 650cfm dual inlet elec. choke carb

anyone guess what the HP and TQ of this motor is???
Im hoping for atleast 380 HP

I got the motor for free out of a 78 Chevy truck so it would have been stupid not to build it

PS I can get a 87 Z28 that currently has a 327 in it for 200 bucks without the motor but the tranny needs rebuilt (700R4). Worth it or not?

Probably.

Since you're running a Demon, you've just "brain deaded" the computer. So, you really don't need to be asking questions about the stock computer (or any computer, for that matter).

You need to be able to mount the engine in the car (and the little things that mount to it like throttle & TV cables), have a transmission that mounts to the engine (and torque arm), and figure out a way to get the TH700 torque converter clutch lock-up to work.

So I dont need to worry about the computer? that seems a little strange. So what do I need to worry about as far as electronics? I know this all may seem to be common sense to you guys but Im new at this so please be patient with me. With the 700R4 Tranny what would be a good stahl? Thanks

PS do I need to worry about getting the camaro for 200 bucks(its a V8 "donor" car)

depends on the components in the donor car. Is the radiator useable? You want new mounts anyway, so forget about those. What about the suspension? Any good parts there? Really for 200 you would probably get your moneys worth out of parts.

What you need to do electrically isn't the issue (you don't plug in the automatic TCC lockup harness is what you don't do).

The issue is a 2.8 T-5 isn't the same thing as a V8 T-5.

No computer isn't such a big deal. My '57 doesn't have one. You can separate out the computer harness from the rest without cutting any wires.
