305 TBI to 350 TPI???

I'm back in the game after a two year absence. Well I'm about a few days away from pickig up an 89 Formula 305 TBI for next to nothing.

I'd pass on the car in favor of a TPI set-up but the price can't be beat.

I'm not the mechanic I like to think I am but am a quick learner. What can be kept between the swap from a 305 TBI to a 350 TPI??? I'd like to hear some war stories from people who have already been down that road for the do's and do not's of the swap.

My goal is a car that will do consistant 12.5's. As the car will be doing double duty, street/strip.

Still have parts that never went on from an earlier project that got T-boned....

Sub-frames
custom CAI system
AFPR
air foil
SLP runners
ported out plenum from an 88 vette
and other misc interior items....

Well I assume you know that both motors can use the same exhaust. Now if you are going to be running 12's you will need a full 3" exhaust from the motor to the tail pipes. You are going to need the wire harness and ECM from the 350. I would ditch the stock TPI induction in favor of a miniram, stealth ram, super ram or LT1 intake conversion (that is if you are strict on your goal of 12's). You can re-use all of the front acessories off of the 305 and use them on the 350. You will need a high flow fuel pump as well.

This is just some of the basics. Here is a tech article on swapping TBI to TPI. Motor size is irrelavent for this article. You will need whatever it says on top of what ever motor you choose.

Just for information about the TBI vs TPI, check out SPO Technology Central, a different perspective to consider! Good Luck

I agree with the shifster on this one. Its gonna be tough to get consistent 12.5's with a TPI setup. There is a guy in our SoCal group that got a 12.59 with a highly modified TPI (if u want to call it a TPI, his runners are COMPLETELY siamesed), and a ton of other mods.
Do you need to remain smog legal? If not, for the price, an LT1 intake is a good option. Get a cam to match the intake as well as the stall converter.
Dont skimp on the chassis/suspension. LCA's and brackets, shocks/struts and springs, a torque arm, and strut tower brace. The chassis/suspension is the key to cutting good 60' times.
