A bad idea, I know, but...

...it caught my interest and I can't seem to shake it.

Near me is an LS1 engine that the driver managed to bottom out and crack the oil filter, and the engine was driven without oil for some time. He says the engine still drove and didn't smoke, but had a knock and a noticeable loss of power. Anyways, he's selling in the rebuildable engine for $650.

The kicker? He says he'll throw in anything else with the car for free. Wiring harness, fuel tank, ecu, pretty much anything under the hood to get it to run.

This sounds too good to be true, so it probably is. In addition, I don't have a whole hell of a lot of money right now, so I would have to rebuild this thing on the side while I prep the car for the swap and acquire a transmission later on. I don't know how many months it would take me to be able to get everything together, and I know an LS1 swap is certainly nothing to take lightly (or to go into with an empty pocketbook). Still, I absolutely hate to pass up a deal.

I need some people's opinions, stat

Get the transmission, then.

That's another issue. He's selling the transmission seperately for more than I think it's worth. If I did buy it, it'd put and even bigger hurt on me.

i say just wait. wait until you can afford what you REALLY want. an LS1 that doesnt need a FULL rebuild and is ready to pop in and go. you will already go through enough expense when you convert your car to LS1, so why not forgo the expense of rebuilding a motor? and besides, you have no clue what the insides of that motor really look like...im sure it ain't pretty...you said it yourself...if it sounds too good to be true...it probably is...

youd be stupid not to buy it.. you could part it out for way more then 600$ depending on the year of the engine.. the intake could be worth 300$ alone

those blocks dont come cheap even as cores

wiring harness and ecm go for alot too..

ebay it all and make some money towards a complete engine..

You can bolt the LS1 engine to a 700r4, or other trans, I am not sure if you can modify the computer to keep from having issues though. A lot of guys that are going carb'd LS1 are using thier 700's.

Wait

The longer you wait to do an LS1 swap, the cheaper it will be.......

However you do realize, that you could buy it and sell everything you can get your hands on for more then $650, common economic thinking would tell you to buy everything and make a profit....

That sounds about right for just an engine and harness that aren't working. I sold my complete broken LS1 w/ harness for $700, hell I've GIVEN away 2 used LS1 bare blocks I've gotten out of my different cars after I've flogged them too much and blew them up, all they needed was new internals too. It's a decent deal man, but you better think long and hard about it. Good luck.
