need some opinions

ok heres the deal..i recently got my 86 trans am...it was a steal for $500 and everything is mint on it..except the engine which needs minor work..anyhow..i wanna pull out the 305 and put something larger in it...my question is could some ppl give me opinions on which engine to swap it with...i really want a 400..but its hard to find one so im not sure..plz give some thoughs on what would be a good engine to put in..thanx

Engine: 283, 2.5,3.8 turbo 350
Transmission: powerglide,auto overdrive, th350,4L80
look around and find a good 350 and go with that

the 400 is getting harder to find which is why i would go with a 350 . they are everywhere and will be for quite some time

just curious..the 350 would be an easy swap right? since its already got a small block chevy in it....

yes it would be a drop in .

are you going to use fuel injection or carb ?

not sure..most likely fuel injected..i dont suppose the TPI off the 305 would fit the 350 would it?

yes the tpi will bolt right up but i believe your going to need some chip work in the computer and a few other modifications will be needed but it will work just fine

yes the 383 stroker is a very nice engine indeed depending upon what your goals are . horsepower and torque wise this can be a very good strong running engine

well then id go with a good strong 383 stroker some good headers freeflowing exhaust atleast 3" pipe ,subframe connectors, and maybe a rear gear swap

hmm..sounds good to me..thanx alot..maybe ill give my friends fbird a run for his money(hes got the big 455 eng.)..thanx again..oh..any suggestions on trans?..i mean i dont think i wanna keep the stock one on there..

depends on what you want there again there are alot of guys here that are running a th350 instead of the 700r4 .

if it were me i would use the th350 but you wont have overdrive with the th350 but thats a decision you will have to make
