305 tpi to 350 tpi Questions

Hey guys

I've done a few searches and i still have a couple of questions.

I have a 85 305 TPI that i want to replace with a 350

How much would it usually cost to buy an average rebuilt 350 and a pair of decent heads and put the tpi from my 305 on it?

It would have a pre 86 block because of the bolt patern right? Doesn't that make it cheaper?

Since I dont have a garage I would have a shop do it for me. They charge 60 dollars an hour of labor. How many hours does it take to do the swap?

I hear i need bigger injectors...what size/number?
What other part will i need?

I'm thinking my budget is around $2000

the $2000 will barely get you the engine and a good set of heads and other parts required for the swap to use the tpi ....

thats not counting the price for a shop to install it ...

you really need to either get a bigger budget or just mod the heck out of your existing engine ...

My 305 definitely needs a rebuild. Would it be cheaper to do this? I just want my car to be reliable again.

Consider a 350 shortblock. Have your 305 heads rebuilt, with 1.94" intake valves installed and new valve springs and retainers, and if the machine shop doesn't charge too much, have them "pocket port" (also sometimes called "bowl work") the heads.

Most machine shops will have builder 350 shortblocks available. However, most shops that can do the above won't actually do the engine install for you. So, that could be an issue.

If all you want is an engine that works at least as well as your 305 once did, the Goodwrench 350 (such as http://www.sdpc2000.com/catalog/130/...ate-Engine.htm ) could probably be done for $2000 installed.

I agree with five. There is no point in re-building a 305 when putting together a 350 will make more power and in most cases cost you less.

"Need" is relative. Most likely, a "mild" 350 will be fine with the stock 19 lb 305 injectors. You can "crutch" them by getting an adjustable fuel pressure regulator to get a little more fuel through them. However, except in max power situations, the 19 lb injectors will work just fine with a mild 350.

What other part will i need?
An '86-later 350 block will work with your 305 heads, but will have a different flexplate. Easily obtainable, just get one for an '86-later 3rd gen.
