engine swap what to do with the wires and lines

just pulled the l69 out and now im putting a 350 carbed mtr in. this carb mtr doesnt have any of the smog stuff on it. or 1/4 of the vacum lines and wires. most of the lines went with the engine but what about the wires. will my car still function without these wires. should i just leave the wires around the engine and only plug the wires that i need to it. also which wires do i need to hookup obviously the hei wire the starter wire alt wire. but what else.

You'd want to scrounge wiring diagrams for two connectors:

1.) C100: located on the firewall, drivers side, near the brake booster. Big plastic 2-piece rectangular block...small block is for your lights and signals, big block is for your engine/wipers/12VDC.

2.) C207: located inside the car, passenger side footwell, white/clear plastic 2-row connector.

Since you were carbed before, you're just concerned about getting 12VDC from the battery to the right places and getting gauge readings (oil pressure, coolant temp...).

Assuming your car is an auto trans, you also need to work up a way to manage the torque converter lockup.

Helms manual will run you around $80 or so from Dal at Vandevere Olds, and it will have everything you need for the diagrams.

Or...you can try alldata.com as they may have the same diagrams for less $$.

I'll summarize my post above, since you didn't get it first time around:

Either buy a Helms manual, or get on alldata.com and buy wiring diagrams.

while doing my engine swap to a 350 carb. we ended up wraping up all the extra wires and throwin in them inside the right side fender where they can't be seen but still be accessed if i ever needed them (dont know why i would, just like to be careful)

we determined what we needed and didnt need by reading the car's manuals, go down to the store and buy the book for it, it has all the wiring diagrams in it... also, read online, i am sure you can find a place that will tell you wire by wire what you need, others have done this and i am sure documented it

i personally would do what Juan did. I am in the process of just finishing up my wiring harness. I eliminated any extra wires that were for the ecu and unrelated to a carbed engine or gauges. It was not worth the trouble. of course i didn't have accurate schematics either. It took alot of tracing wires. If you have an accurate schematic though, it might be fairly simple.

Edit: I guess this all depends on if your harness is one or two piece. if it's two piece, just unplug the harness coming out of the passenger side, you shouldn't need it, and can replace it if you ever do. if it's the one piece like mine, i'd just hide the unnecessary wires. though mine does look pretty clean now.

i believe mine is 1 piece as its a 84 and urs is fi so and is 2 piece so that would make mine 1 i should onlyneed the starter wires the hei wires and the alt wires to make the engine run correct. also i would only need oil pressure and then volts and water and that should be all correct.

You also need to bring fused 12VDC from the battery to the passenger compartment. Two separate full-time feeds if I recall right, one for the fuse panel and one for the headlights/signals.

Most thirdgens I've seen hang a few fusible links on the big battery positive pole of the starter.

Mine's an '82 Cross Fire Injection chassis harness, not likely the same pinouts as yours, so I can't accurately tell you what to plug where.

Mine was easy. Disconnect it at the computer harness. There should be 2 plugs. One for all the ECM stuff (runs through pass side fender), and the other is the power for the ECM.

I removed the entire ECM harness and the plugs you need are still left. And unplug the "check engine" light.

It's a silver box behind the pass side kick panel. Two plugs go into it. One's basically a feed to the ECM from the fusebox. Just unplug that one and take the check engine bulb out. The big connector goes to the engine. Follow it through the passenger's side inner fenderwell. Disconnect/unplug what comes from THAT HARNESS ONLY. You'll figure out the rest.

I assume by asking that, you reside in a non-emissions area?

I know my fan isn't controlled by the ECM at all. Mine's electric too.

Just a temp switch screwed in the side of the block, and a relay for the fan. I have an adjustable now. Water temp gage wire goes to a sensor in the DS head. I don't know what a "mil" light is....

A Hayne's manual is invaluable....not trying to be a smart*ss, it's helped me. I have one! Sounds like you need to get the right color wires goin to the right places.

Oh, and you already know you'll need to get a vacuum advance distributor and non CC carb right?
