SBC 400 swap
SBC 400 swap
Ok my friend gave me a an 84 camaro that was orignally a v6 but now is a rolling chassis. I was wondering how hard it would be and how much money would it cost to put my sbc 400 from my el camino into this camaro. Now I have no clue where to start on something like this and I would also like to put the turbo 400 tranny in with it also. So any help would be good. thanx

Go to the junkyard and get the upper clamshell mounts. Buy new motor mounts, they are only 10 bucks a peice. The small things will nickel and dime you. Radiator, hoses, belts, Accessories, etc. A lot of this you may already have with the motor, though.

Alright well it seems fairly easy but what about the tranny crossmember, will there need to be and cutting or fabricating done to it ? thanx for all the help

If you make your own cross member like I did for the TH400 you can free up all kinds of room for dual exhaust
Hey Ron, good to see you back around

I assume you read the "Important/Useful Information" sticky above about V6 to V8 swaps.
One issue you'll have to address is the torque arm mount. If using a non-3rd gen transmission, IMO the best route to go is with one of Spohn's crossmembers, with the torque arm as well if the budget allows.

Damn, I just noticed that you said th400. I feel obligated to post this link, even though most people say its too much money for the parts. Not in my opinion, but thats ok.

Basically if you already have the stock torque arm, and you can get a 700R4 tailshaft (about 20 bucks at a junk yard), then this kit makes the th400 a direct bolt in. Comes with everything from the kickdown switch to dust cover and dipstick tube. I run one with my th350, but its only about 1/2 as much money. Still the cost isnt that high.

The advantages of the Spohn http://www.spohn.net/product.cfm?productid=1301 , even though it is even more money are:
- A much better torque arm
- An adjustable torque arm
- A torque arm that mounts to the crossmember instead of the transmission, which takes the torque off of the tranny mount
IMO...

I bought the Spohn torque arm for my 700r4....its not on the car yet, but it sure looks pretty! The only problem I had with Spohn was that it took about 6 wks to get the product. So you have to have some patients. This spring I am goining to run the car with and without, just to see if I spent my $ well.
