upgrade motor or look for a lt1

I was thinking about upgrading my 1989 gta 5.7 (auto)

I have the exaust already, now I wanted to have the motor worked on. I was thinking about having it pro built to about 350 horse power. I can do it for about $3000 keeping the Smog intact.

or

Buy a gen 4 and start with more horse power to begin with, although, the generation 4's have much less torque.

I must say, I love my GTA, the way it looks, drives and everything else. But I don't want to through good money after bad!!

What would you do?

Put an LT1 in your GTA, get the power you want, and you wont have to curse and scream at a 4th gen when you go to work on it.

Not true. LT1's and LS1's will put much more torque down to the wheels over the entire power band. With onlt 3 grand to use you may just want to stick with what you have and do a cam/induction swap. I am sure $3k could swap you in an LT1 but most likely only by someone that knows the tricks of the swap and can avoid nickle and diming it to death.

I would use the money to have your current motor built. If you are happy with the way you car is now I sugest you spend the money upgrading it. It will cost a more to buy, and eventually modify and LS1 or LT1 than to upgrade what you have.
