Sure. They're basically the same car & engine. Some details changed, such as belt type/routing, induction type, etc. But, the chassis remained basically unchanged from 1982 to 1992.
What's in the '88 now?

It probably won't be emissions legal.
Why do you think cutting or welding would be required?

Im not worried about the emissions i can get around that but i thought that you might need to cut and weld on the chassis to get the motor mounts for the 305 engine from the 1985 to fit on the chassis of the 1988, are the holes on the chassis the same for the mounts in both cars??

If the '88 has a V8 in it, they're the same. They didn't change from 1982 to 1992.

There's an "Important/Useful Information" sticky at the top of this forum that explains the basics of the V6 to V8 swap.
The '85 would be a computer controlled carb. Hopefully you got the wiring harness and computer along will all the sensors when you got the engine.
The '88 has a high pressure fuel system with an in-tank electric pump. You're either going to have to regulate the pressure down with a return-style regulator, or drop the fuel tank and remove the in-tank pump. The '85 has a mechanical engine mounted pump which has a return line on it, I've often speculated that you could run the electric pump to the inlet of the mechanical and it would take care of the regulation part, but I've never tried it. I frankly don't know if the '88 V6 computer has any control over the in-tank pump.
The engine mounts on the frame go in a different place for a V6 than the do for a V8. That's explained in the sticky.
Read the sticky and see if you have other questions.

Could i replace the carb and make it a manuel and get rid of the computer running it, i don't want to have to deal with the wiring harness unless i have to

Yes. You'll need a vacuum/mechanical advance distributor and some means of locking up the torque converter clutch. Getting the transmission throttle valve cable hooked properly to an aftermarket carb can be a challenge.
