84 Carb to 86 TPI

hey guys, im havin a hard time finding any threads specificly for my project. i have a L69 z28 and im trying to retrofit an 86 IROC TPI setup that i'm picking up this weekend. I've never done anything like this and I wanna make sure I get everything I need.

So far i know for sure that i need

Intake manifold
Plenum
Runners
Injectors
Fuel Rails
Fuel Pump
ECM
Throttle Body

What other hardware do i need? What sensors do i need?

As far as the harness goes, I looked up a Painless Wiring
setup that i saw some guys mention here but im not sure they have my application... maybe i missed it? dunno.

PS i am doing this for smog purposes not for hp gains. that ive always liked the way the TPI looked.

ANY info will help.

It used to be the hottest conversion on the block, these days, people tend to swap from tpi to carb. TPI will give you better throttle response, better milage, and perhaps a few more ponies. If not any more hp, it will give you alot more torque, the kind of power you really want on the street.

People swap out tpi because it's a restriction when your trying to reach high hp levels. I'm not shure of it's limits, perhaps around 300 or 320 or so.

THe easiest way to gain a bit more later on with tpi, is to swap the manifold to an lt1 version. Then high rpm's is reachable, and it can sustain alot more airflow. It's not an expensive swap, all the fuel rails, electronics, pumps, and fuel lines from tpi can be used.

I think you'd need fuel lines, and a complete wiring harness with all the sensors in place. Can be bought complete from Hawks for example, used with sensors.

I'll say go for it, you'll learn alot.

man , i started reading your reply and was starting to get PISSED! haha i thought you were gonna bash me for wanting TPI. but you didnt . thanks. i appreciate the info. i completely forgot about hawks, arent they kinda pricey though? ill check them out.

but yeha like i said im not lookin for high hp because im just a student. id be happy with just a stock z28. only doin tpi for CA smog reasons.

another question.. are the accesory brackets different btwn the two? and where could i find a set of fuel lines brand new?

hmm i noticed that the places that offer harnesses for TPI swaps, they say they offer them for 85-89 tpi's and 90-92s so im gonna assume they dont need my year they need the TPIs year?

Right, Your gonna need the harness for the tpi, not your car. There is a difference between speed density, and mass airflow (MAF), or in other terms, the way tpi measures the airflow.

Also, there is some difference on 305 and 350 tpi, like ecm (computer) and injector size. I personally wouldn't buy a harness from painless, their way expensive, arent they? I think hawks or some other supporter on this site sold complete tpi setups with harness, fuel lines, pumps and everything used for about $500.

That should give you an idea on what the harness is worth.
I cant give you all the answers, you'll have to poke around, but this thing is very doable. I think there even exsists a tpi swap book, perhaps on amazone. My advise would be to get a complete kit, so you know you have the right parts.

There is some preferences between speed density and maf's, but I can't tell you what's good and not, but it mostly come into effect when your upping the hp.

yeah the painless ones go for around 300... i just dont want to pull the harness from the donor car haha. the guys parting his car out and i cant pull the engine out so its gonna be a bitch and a half to get i think. but i guess ill just have to bite the bullet.

i did a search on reprogramming proms so that i can use his automatic ecm for my t-5 ecm... but i didnt come up with much... can you guys point me in the right direction

Prom questions should be placed on the DIY prom board, they'll know what's worth knowing. Anyways, I found that book I mentioned, 10 bucks used on amazone.
