Ls1

Hey all,
Question, I have a 89 305, and I would like to put in a LS1 motor so I remove the EGR system on my car. I will be using my Accel Gen VII Computer and Accel Super Ram. Does anybody know is a 350 LS1 motor will bolt in my car. Does anybody have a LS1 motor in the car now?? if so do you like it.

Thanks
Brad

lol.. good luck gettin a superram on an LS1.. and why would u put an LS1 in to remove egr? i doubt your computer would work with it as well, unless its the ls1 version

the engine fits but the intake is a bit different then the sbc ones.. have a look at the 4 page FAQ at the top of the page

this has to do with calif smog.. because the Accel Gen VII computer doesnt control EGR, so I removed the EGR system, if fact removed all smog, but now I must get a smog legal machine.

probably better off selling the car and getting a newer ls1 car.. i think you have to jump through alot of hoops with engine swaps and emissions just remembering from one of the guys that did it on here.. not to mention the royal pain it would be trying to get all the ls1 emissions controls onto a thirdgen..

your right. but I can install all the smog stuff and make it work, its just the egr will always be open. (the accel will not open or close the EGR) The smog pump, AIR headers will all be hooked up, guess I need to transform the engine once every two years, I can also have the car dyno tuned to pass the emissions (thanks to GEN VII) the EGR will give it a better emission reading, plus all the visual inspection bull *hit. I don’t want to sell the car, I have 6 years of blood, sweat, and tears. not to mention all the pain in the butt to install the supercharger!!!

I don't think a superram will fit on an LS1 since it's a totally different block and head design, better off just keeping the stock LS1 intake and PCM if you're going to do a swap like that.

If the EGR is stuck wide open, it will run like crap, which may further mess up emissions except at highway speeds.

The superram manifold will not fit, in no way, shape or form, on an LS1.

If you have a real wild setup, you'll need more than an EGR to help you pass.

the smog pump is controlled by the pcm .. there isnt a pump on the drive of the ls1... same goes with the evap and purge.. which you would need as well.. on the gas tank and computer controlled... then cats as well

furthermore you would not be able to control an ls1 engine with a sbc accel controller.. the ls1 is a completely different peice with a total different spark system...

youd be better off trying to rig up something on your small block depending on what kind of headers you have and what not.. then just get it tuned before hand with your current system you should be able to clear emissions with the right tuning esp with a bigger cam such as the hot cam that didnt even need an egr setup

Removing your EGR doesn't help with an LS1 swap, and it's not a prerequisite.

Not with an LS1 you won't. Only current aftermarket ECM that can talk to an LS1 is the FAST box, and at last check you had to strap on a separate crank sensor for it.

Yup, several LS1 equipped 3rd gen owners frequent this board. I love mine!

If you're looking for an easy way to get smog-legal in California, an LS1 swap isn't it.

kevinc is correct - LS1 swap in CA is not an "easy" thing to do. Can it be done? yes. Has it been done? Yes.

Basically, you will scrap EVERYTHING you have right now for your drivetrain though. You will have to have a complete LS1 engine, LS1 cats, LS1 PCM, LS1 matching transmission, LS1-style gas tank, and all the little emissions stuff in place. You'll also have to do some rewiring or buy a custom wiring harness.

Forget your idea about your "Gen VII" thing - not only will it not work on an LS1 engine, but in CA you aren't allowed to use aftermarket controllers on an LS1 even if you did have one that would work. Besides that, LS1 computers are fully tuneable with computer software, anyway.

My car is being built to pass CA emissions (I'm moving to San Diego soon), and I'll tell you - it has made this whole project a nightmare. I've spent probably an extra 1000 hours of research, planning, scrapping out ideas and replanning, etc. It would have been a lot easier (and at this point, cheaper) to have just rebuilt the old TPI in my 89 Formy AND gone out and bought a newer LS1 based car.

Good luck to you.
