LT1 Swap from Totalled 97 z28
Ok I have a 92 3.1L RS. My family shop rescently came into posestion of a totaled z28 with the LT1. So I have a few questions before doing the swap. I already know I need new exhuast from the headers back. Is the SLP LT1 exhaust going to be able to fit with the long header or do I need the shorties for it to fit right? Also I was wondering if it is possible to use the Holley Stealth Ram intake or is the only intake upgrade the LT4? My basic goal is to get my car fast enough to outrun my Dads 96 SVT Cobra Convertable. His is stack except for the mufflers. Any not so expensive upgrade suggestions are appreciated.

why would you want to put a stealth ram on an LT1 ??? anyways it wont fit.. different bolt pattern, and is too tall.. made for completely different engine.. the LT1 intake is fine the way it is..
so you want to beat a 96 cobra with your LT1?? thats not hard to do with basic bolt ons.. the rest is going to be driver and how well you take off from a start to how well you shift.
to answer your other question.. no the SLP exhaust will not work with long tubes..
if i were you.. before i put that LT1 back in, i would change the Opti-spark out for a fresh one, but thats just me.
do the basic bolt ons and you should well ahead of that cobra, spend time with tuning, using LT1 edit, get a 3.5" catback cold air intake.. you're good to go.
the only cobra i would worry about is the 03-04 with the super charger.

i also see that this is your 1st post.. i would spend A LOT of time on this site researching what you need to do the swap, such as gas lines, fuel pump upgrade, motor mounts, radiator, fans, tranny cross member, then there is the favorite; wiring harness splicing..
its not just a drop it in an go swap, its involved, so research what you are getting into, because chances are, its bigger than you think.
on a side note, if you have not bought headers already, headers made for a TPI 92 engine will work. there are some that are made for LT1's that will not fit, due to frame rails or steering linkage or brake lines.. search it out before you buy parts.

Yeah I have done a LOT of research on it. I know I need to get the right fuel line and I have the website address to order them from. I also know that to keep the ac I need to cut a notch in the passenger side portion of the frame right in front of the motor mount so it will fit right. I am also going to be using the mounts out of the totaled Z28 along with the fuel pump and maybe the gastank and rear end. I believe it has the aluminum drive shaft so I will probably use that as well along with the tranny. I have also come across quite a few posts on here about the wiring harness and how to get it right. This will be my first actual attempt at doing this myself but on an upnote I will have a very well experienced mechanic with some 40+ years experience. My dad is going to help me at our family mechanic shop. He told me to do all the research on it and what parts are needed and all that stuff and we will work on it as soon as we can. I will get some before and after shots cause I am also planing on painting it too cause I can do that for cheap beings that we also own a body shop. Thanks for the reply though all the information I can get will come in handy.

Oh yeah. It is kind of a father son project even though it is my Camaro. As for other parts I forgot to mention that I need a 4th gen Radiator and fan setup to make the hosing setup easier but I can use a 92 z28 radiator and fans if I want. I am thinking of using the rear end suspension as well because I think it is better than my rs rear suspension. We are also going to be putting sub frame connectors in it to keep from twisting the body. Do want to put all this work into it and do that. That would suck massively.
Wait I just thought of something. Can't I use the fuel lines off the Z28? I mean I have an entire car to get parts off of so why not use those. We are also going to swap the computers and all that spiffy stuff. Alls I know is I can't wait to see the look on the local ricers faces when they think they are biting on a piece of worn out v6 and get eaten by a 350.
Would anyone recommend any different exhaust and headers or would the SLP be a definite good one to go with? or Borla? I had also considered Flowmaster?
Future upgrade when I can afford it will be a complete LT4 upgrade complete with LT4 intake, LT4 head, Hotcam, roller rockers, etc.... basically a complete LT4 conversion with a 58mm throttle body and all airways ported to match for the best airflow possible. Needless to say I don't have the money for that now.

Don't have the time to read the rest of it right now, but this caught my attention. Don't waste the money on the LT4 conversion. Yeah you get nice power, but its quite overrated when you can get more power for less money through ported stock heads and a better cam.

if you are really looking hard to find a different intake, Lingenfelter for a while made an lt1 base for their Super Ram intake. you can still buy the regular super ram intake, plenum , runners and base but the lt1 base is not available anymore. i saw one for sale on camaro28.com a long time ago and thats how i know about it. if you are really interested you could even give LPE a call or email and see if they happen to have one left.
as for beating the cobra. you should be able to swap the whole drivetrain and not change anything and still be faster than the cobra. stock for stock an lt1 4th gen and a 96-98 cobra are a drivers race. and 3rd gens weigh a bit less than most 4th gens so that will work to your advantage. if you really want, to mod the engine, you can do long tubes from an L98 3rd gen, and whatever catback you want with a custom y pipe. then a cc306 or a gm847 cam (search cz28.com for these) should make 350+rwhp with the stock heads and some tuning.
also you DO NOT need a CAI. you have the TPI style dual snorkel intake. that will be fine for the LT1.

what company actually makes these cams, cc306 or a gm847, I have searched all over and can't seem to find them anywhere. Even better if someone has an actual part # so I could order it from somewhere.
CC306 is Comp Cams, I think Crane makes the GM847, but its not listed as that.
GM847 is just the trade name of the cam because the GM part number ends in 847. Go on the Scoggin-Dickey website under GM Performance Cams and you can find it there.
