96 vortec 350 with tbi?

help?

i'm wanting to upgrade my 87 305 to the 96 vortec 350,....

i got a 96 vortec 350 roller motor from a donor truck

but i need to use my tbi on it with my 87 computer

what do i need to do to make this work?

anyone know where i can get a "cheap" intake for this?...the only one i've found so far that will accept this swap is around $300

thanks

Are you only getting the long block or are other parts from the truck available?

I doubt you'll be able to find an intake that's cheaper than that, unless you want to switch it over to carb, in that case it will only cost you $170.

Is this a trick question?

That's so simple, I think you must surely have outsmarted yourself somehow.

Just stick your existing intake and TB on it. Get a chip, injectors, and knock sensor out of (or for) a TBI 350 truck or Caprice.

Or, go get the whole intake/TB/chip setup off of a 350 TBI truck of about the same age as your car, and a new knock sensor.

He has a 350 Vortec long block, he's stock intake off of his 87 won't fit the vortec heads.

yeah, it looks like thats what i need....i was just hoping there was another alternative....like maybe another brand of intake or something.....that $300 intake will really set me back

i have the whole 96 350 vortec long block, and i was wanting to use my existing throttle body injection, just like ya said though....looks like i'll need an expensive intake

does anyone know if there's any other mods i have to do?

such as distributor, knock sensor thing.....etc...?

The 350 injectors should be big enough if you don't go too big on the cam. The 305 ones will not suffice. You do need the knock sensor and ESC module as you mentioned. The best way to get the chip right is to do it yourself. TBIchips is a crutch and is only a stab in the dark of what your motor really needs. It can be used to get your motor to run but it cannot be used to get the most out of your motor. If you are going to mod a TBI system you need to burn the chips yourself.

i'll probably get flamed for this, but what is needed to burn your own chip?

this is my first "dab" into any kind of fuel injection of sorts....i've always messed with carbs.....

"You do need the knock sensor and ESC module as you mentioned" ...i thought i "didnt" need to use the knock and the esc.(what ever the esc is?)

A 305 knock sensor will work with a 350 but it won't work the way it is supposed to.

As for chip work, take a look at the DIY PROM board as well as the TBI stickies. They will get you started on what you need to buy/do.

vortec and tbi

I have done this on a 91, not sure of 87 differences, but here is what i needed.
I used the GMPP intake mentioned above, I got lucky and found it on ebay for less. There are some other brands on ebay that fit the vortec heads, but are not GM. The vortec block does not have the internal water pump bypass, it is provided on the front of the GM intake, be sure to get a water pump with port for this. There is no vacuum port underneath the TBI for the brake booster, only 1 port on rear side of intake. This port is in the way of stock TBI fuel lines, dont understand this since it is a GM intake ??. The intake will accept egr (91) but it is not plumbed internally, needs piping to exhaust manifold to make functional. This port is also in way of stock fuel lines. The throttle bracket will not fit without modification. Jegs had one, but it didnt fit my cable arrangements. All this to say, it will take a little work, but I think it is worth it if you want to keep the TBI and computer.
