Best Cam for 383...car in California :-(

Hey guys,
i need your suggestions on the different cam specs I need for my new 383. I have listed the engine/car specs below. Again, this car is registered in California, and passing smog here is like passing the State BAR exam...lol. I know that alot of it has to do with tuning the car, but I want an all purpose cam..street friendly, yet, has the ***** for highway cruisng.

Anyway..here are the specs of the car:

383CI
Fastburn heads (with 1.6 roller rockers)
Superram
T56
3.08 diff. gearing (posibly will go to 3.42 or even 3.73 because of the 6th gear)

I want power across the power range.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Tommy

Assuming you have a factory roller cam block.

These are from what I heard of passing, assuming a roller block...

LPE219 will pass with tuning, LPE has confirmed that it will pass on a 350.
CC-503 on a 114LSA but that was before the IM240 in norcal and on a 383.

You can go less than the 503, like the 502. You can also go with the CC-305 or CC-306. CC-305 has/can passed in a 350 in CA.

If you can tune, I'd go with the 503, personally. That's the cam I would get. There isn't a whole lot of overlap at idle, but it ramps quickly so I'm not sure about the IM240 test. The 502 will likely pass with a good tune. Get them ground on a 114LSA if you want and you'll have some more wiggle room.

Edit: There's also the LT4 Hot Cam.

people on the CA board have passed with the ZZ9, ZZ4,Crane 305 and LT4 Hot Cam... of course all cars need to be tuned if you swap a cam..

You have a good combo. I would go with the LPE 219 and get it tuned. The cam makes good power and idles like a stocker at 750 rpm. Go with the 3.73's at least w/that 6spd.
