What exactly is the difference between a 2 bolt and a 4 bolt engine and how can i tell what my engine is?

its the number of bolts on the main caps. except the front and rear caps which all have 2. If you have a 305 like the signiture says you have 2 bolt main. all 305s where 2 bolt main.

4 bolt would be better, but there were alot of hi performance small blocks built before 4 bolts mains were invented. If you can find a 4 bolt block it would be better. It really depends on how much power you want to make. A 2 bolt main would be fine, especially if it a mostly stock motor with a few mods. My 406 sbc is a 2 bolt main and its probably close to 500 hp.

Would I have to do any modifications to put a 4 bolt engine into my car which apparently has a 2 bolt?

You wont need to worry about having a 4-bolt block over a 2-bolt block unless you are making well over 400hp. Even then, a factory 4-bolt block isn't much stronger than the 2-bolt block, so it doesn't really matter that much. If you really need to worry about that, then you should buy a 2-bolt block and have it machined for aftermarket (splayed) 4-bolt caps. They are MUCH stronger than the 4-bolt factory caps.
