Cadillac 500's are really good motors. There is even a great aftermarket for them now. The are far superior to the BBC because it is quite a bit lighter. There are several members on here that have the Cad 500 in their rides.

It's just a notion I never could put out of my head.I have no plans to do it,but if I had the car,and an engine I knew ran good laying around,I'd damn sure see what happened. It would be fun to "old school" it.Fab up mounts, brackets, etc.Slip a mild cam into the stock engine, otherwise, just stick to the classic bolt-ons,intake,make up a set of headers, etc. You know, just a grassroots project for fun.I've read that you can bolt 472 heads on a 500,and crank the compression up to like 12:1,that's cheap power.
Anyways, anyone else got an opinion?I'd love to hear from anyone or see pics of the swap!Or from anyone else who's ever had this wierd yearning to do it!

Suppose, just for a minute, that there was an old 1973 Eldorado sitting out in a field....with a 500 sitting in it. Would you drive to NE Kansas to pick it up, Irockz?

Hey dudes-
Everything you ever wanted to know about caddy motors can be found here www.cowboyseven.us ,the guy w/ the cad powered mustang goes by LUXLX there, or here www.500cid.com for parts, swap ****, headders, cams ect. Also, do some looking around on that cowboyseven forum for a guy that goes by POTTER. Check out his website for ****in' radical cad motors.
By the way big caddys run real good, I have had a bunch. Anyone who tells you they suck is just being stupid. I'm going to put a 500 in my T/A, smoken' those BFG's baby!!! Stock 500 is 300hp 500lbft on the dyno, now all bull**** aside, thats alot of useable power no matter what brand the **** is.

Actually, it shouldn't be that bad of a swap. Its fairly light for an engine of its size once you dump the junk stock intake (probably the heaviest one you will ever encounter!), and unlike a BBC they are cheap and available. We have two of them; both came from Pull-A-Part for about $120 each, and one had freshly rebuilt heads! Most of them were rated at around 500/525 torque STOCK, and building one to make 600/600 or better isn't all that difficult, or as expensive as you would think. The blocks are VERY strong, the heads flow well (Magnante at Hot Rod claimed they flowed as well as old Mopar Max Wedge race heads) with even mild porting, and Bulldog is now making aluminum heads and single plane intakes for them. The cranks are very durable as well, and according to Maximum Torque Specialties the stock cast pistons will take a big nitrous hit...they have used up to 250hp worth on some of their land yacht test cars.
The motors only have two real weaknesses...the rockers ( a mickey mouse pedestal type that tend to break), which is easy enough to fix (max Torque has shaft rockers that won't break the bank); and the connecting rods, which don't like a lot (over 5500rpm) of revs. Of course, with 500cid, you don't exactly have to rev the snot out of it anyway! If you're so inclined, Eagle Olds rods can be used with a special piston (Ross) to eliminate the problem.
BTW neither of Redraif's motors are going in an F-body; one is going in her International Scout II, the other one (which has the shaft rockers, Eagle rods, Ross pistons, etc, and a few other goodies) is going in her Dually...its still at the machine shop. I'll likely be buying another to go in my 85 TA, just as a super cheap toy (lots of NOS).
