Well, it only matters if you want to use the original driveshaft. An '86, regardless of engine or tranny, would use a short driveshaft, meaning a long tailshaft TH350 would be the right length for the original driveshaft. Your short tailshaft TH350 would use the same driveshaft as the '82/'83 3-spd auto or 4-spd manual tranny cars.

Your best bet is to buy a B&M changeover kit. It give you the tranny mount for the 350 and a bracket to hook the torque arm to. Then all you have to worry about is the proper driveshaft.
