Overheating and Timing problems

I have swapped a 350 bored 40 over into my 1987 4bbl camaro. At first the engine started fairly well and would run for about 10 minutes and then wildly overheat. Becuase the dip stick resides on the opposite side of the block I removed the manifolds and switched to a set of hedman elite headers. Last week it got so hot when we were trying to chase down the problem that the hedders glowed and the ceramic coating changed colors I have a few questions...

Could this be a timing issue? I have deleted both the EGR and AIR ststems from the car and the connections for both are laying unconnected. What should the timing be for the motor. I have the CC carb on the car still, but the motor is origionally from an early 70's truck. ( before I rebuilt it) Could a vacuum leak where the EGR used to connect cause a timing problem?

Also, What do I need to do to the CC QJET to get it to run properly with my 357. I have no emissions testing here in IN so I don't mind playing with primaries if that is needed. I am concerned about the mixture being to lean since the motor has more displacementr. What steps are needed to complete this swap?

I'm sure there is information I am leaving out. Just let me know and I will do my best to get it for you. I have no idea why she is overheating all of the time. The radiator cap is good, system pressure seems ok, ....the fan switch doesn't work for some reason, even though I just replaced it....

I'm running out of ideas.... I'm hoping it is timing ( It is messed up now from me messing with it) BTW... would the timing for an old SBC be different than on ours? what should my timing be at.

PLEASE HELP ME GET THIS THIRD GEN ON THE ROAD

Put the EGR back on. It doesn't hurt anything being functional, but the same can't be said for it not being on. Mostly light throttle/load pinging, but that's probably not your overheating issue.

Timing should be around 6 to 10 base, meaning with the 4-wire connector disconnected and at idle. Reconnect after you have it set.

I've had absolutely no issues with the CC q-jet controlling a rather healthy 350.

Oops, '87 model. Disconnect the ESC wire.

EGR is disconected because I am running headers and becuase the intake does not have the hole for it. I will try setting the timing tonight. I am going to plug the vacuum to the egr (not sure how I missed it before) is there anything I should do with the connector. I have read that it should be bridged with a resister. What is your opinion on that?

Thanks for the help!

Headers don't have anything to do with EGR. Not having it on the intake is a different matter.

Either bridge with a resistor, or just hook up the solenoid.

Ok so I can handle the EGR, but I doubt that that is causing the car to overheat so badly. Is timing my most probable culpret, or should I look elsewhere?

Start by getting the timing set properly. Until the ignition is doing what it is supposed to do, you really can't troubleshoot anything else.

I set the timing to 6* last night. the car still overheated badly. I then took off the radiator cap and ran it again trying to get out any air bubbles that may be in the system. Nothing seems to help.

BTW: the H and G VINs for 87 do not have a break in the tan/blk line by the blower like the tpi has. The wiring diagram shows a solid tan wire between the distributor and the ecu. Mine though had a Tan/BLK wire, but the wire had no break in it. I cut the wire and put a breakable splice in it and it seems to work fine.
