LT1/LS1 into 3rd gen.

When swapping an LT1 or LS1 with manual trans into a third generation, does the shifter come up through the factory opening in the console or does it require modification. I would like to swap one of the two into my 89 Camaro, preferably the LS1, but dont want to cut up my interior. What are my options? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and *** bless

you will have to enlarge the hole at the back of the stock opening about 2-3 inches back.

when you pop the shift boot off, you'll see where there is a thicker piece of metal around the shift boot where the screws actually screw into. I cut all the way to the very back edge of that. I've got about an 1/8th" behind the back of the shifter housing.

You might also consider using a T-5 5 speed ( later model World class one). This way you wouldn't have to cut your floor at all. I use one in my 87 IROC with a centerforce clutch. It drives great. I do not drag race the car.........but it does go to open track days where it is run as hard as it will go.........Good luck anyway! Pat

Yeah, but that .50:1 6th gear make a whole lot of difference driving on the interstate. Makes a difference between 20-23mpg and 25-27mpg.

I've actually seen 25 mpg on the highwaywith the lt-1 /T-5 combo......... I guess the 6 speed would do better..........but for me it wouldn't be worth the price of the 6 speed.....I'm thrilled to get the milage I get..........My 84 TA gets a best of 19 on the highway ...........it's got the original electronic quadrajet..........

What gears were in the rear? I'm talking 25-27 with 3.73's and I know of one getting that with 4.10's

i get 29-31 on the freeway with my LS1, but i'm still running 3.42 gears in the rear. My dad with his LT1 get about 25-26 on the freeway with 4.10's.

I run 3.27's in the rear, and an aluminum driveshaft. The milage I got was running between 70 to 75 mph on a flat highway.
