A BBC swap may be a little over your head. The jump off the line has way more to do with tires and suspesion setup than the transmission.

All the power in the world will do you no good unless you can plant it.

depends on how you build the motor...just cubic inches will not give you power.

Don't count on your stock trans holding too much power.

Depends on 1000 different factors. If you said the hp, mileage and driveability you are looking for we'll be able to help you out more.

Hmm,let's see. I have about 3500$ invested into a motor(383) that isn't even a motor yet.( crank, rods, pistons, heads,HSR only!) The sky is the limit! If money is not an object...go NASCAR!

haha money is an object i was jw how long it would take me to save up enough to do the job, $3,500 is alot of oil changes for me haha (i work at a lightning lube) so it will take me a little while to save up, you guys think it would be cheaper to get a used complete one so i wouldnt have to mess with all that?, also will the 383 bolt up right to the stock tranny thanks

a 383 is just a 350 with a 3.75" stroke.(the stroke of the crank found in 400 sbc's) it will bolt up just like any other small block chevy.

i'd say if your gonna build one, to save up around $3K to do it...then get ready to spend about $2k on a tranny/converter that will hold it...then another $750 or so on parts to beef up the rearend...that is if you build the rearend and motor yourself...the $2K for the tranny would include assembly, but not installation.

but before you start throwing power at this car, get a set of subframe connectors, and get the rear suspension taken car of...and go ahead and build the rearend to hold the power and put in a set of gears that will work with your combo.

BMR Fabrication Inc.
or
Spohn Performance, Inc.

both of those will will have some excellent rear suspension pieces and subframe connectors.

as far at the converter/tranny, yes, you need to get a converter that matches the combo and i doubt you'll be able to find a 700r4 for $500 that will do the job. normally, for a GOOD tranny/converter combo, get ready to drop between $2000-$2500. if you can get away without OD and run a th350, you can get something to handle the power for less, but streetability without OD is a concern as well as getting a torque arm to work with it.

do you have all the special tools required to rebuild the tranny and a knowledgable person to do it for you for free? if so, rock on, do it to it! i've built several motors and rearends and whatnot and i still won't touch more than the valve body of a transmission.
