clean engine for swap
does anyone know what chemical I can use to clean the paint off an old long block with out hurting the ruber and plastic parts? (seals)

That wouldn't do much for the plastic and rubber parts. . . 
I've just degreased them before painting. But, I'm not building show-car engines, either.

black can of engine degreaser, no idea of the name on the can though, or theres always gunk-brite engine degreaser. follow the directions and use a brush on the hard to scrub stuff.

and for the love of freely moving sbc's, make sure the ports are all taped shut. i killed one once cleaning it out and i didn't keep the ports sealed and it seized before i even got a chance to drive it!

By the time I painted mine... heads/intake/timing cover/oil pan installed.... I just used card board to cover the shiny parts and lightly coated it... its not a show car lol.. hopefully it doesnt seize up on me Nova... lol
