305 to 350 help asap!!!
will the 305 harmonic balancer work on a 350? i know the flexplate is the same but the balancer has a diffrent part number. need to find out quick the engine is ready to go back into the car.

what i really need to know is do the 305 and the 350 have the same imbalance? i know the flexplates are the same so i figured the balancer was too seeing as they work together to balance the engine.

The dampeners are neutrally balanced on both the 305 and 350. You could interchange them without affecting the balance of the engine.

You've got some facts wrong.
First, it's not a harmonic balancer, it's a harmonic damper.
Second, it doesn't work with the flexplate to balance the engine, dampers are neutrally balanced (except for 3.75" stroke SBC set-ups - generally speaking).
Now, damper theory varies a little, but in general, 305 and 350 dampers are designed slightly differently. Plus, dampers aren't a forever part. Best bet would be to go get yourself a new one intended for a 350. You may need to get a new timing tab as well, depending upon the location of the tab on your front cover.

I'm kind of having the same problem too. I put an L05 from an '87 van into my LO3 1992 camaro. I didn't change the harmonic balancer or crank pulley before I swapped engines. The belt starts to come off if I run it more than about 30 seconds because the pulley from the 350 is 1/2-3/4" shorter than the one from the 305.
I swapped transmissions too. I'm also using the starter and flexplate from the 350 because they're bigger than the ones from my 305 and I wasn't sure if they'd work or not.
So can I use the balancer off my 305 on the 350 and still use the 350 flexplate, or do I have get the L98 balancer? Would an L98 balancer work with an LO5 flexplate? I tried measuring the width of both the pulley and the damper, and it looks like the pulley is the only thing that's a different width.

Flexplates are identical between 305s and 350s, as long as they have the same type of rear main seal (and the same number of teeth - 3rd gen V8s all have 153 or 12-3/4" diameter). '86-up have one-piece rear main seal, '85-back have two-piece rear main seal.
L98 application would be '87-'92 f-body, VIN code 8.

ok so i got the new balancer on it is a bit shorter so i just didnt bottem it out i lined up the pulleys and used red loctite so the crank bolt wont back out. on the motor mounts we got one of them to seat but the other wont i put in new polly mounts can u put those in backwards cause it looks like the one that wont seat is catching on the metal strip that sticks out of the end of the polly mount.
