Define "problems".
Recalls? Consumer Reports rating? Early failure? Inadequate engineering? Inadequate performance? Excessively expensive to modify?
Need to know what you're after.

yes, it's a good motor.
Prone to valve stem oil seal leaks, just like all other SBC motors. Cheap easy fix.
Hard/Costly to modify for high RPM power, but is notorious for lots of torque, and throttle response.

305's outside of this community, are junk motors. yeah they do the job, but a 350 is virtually the same, and does that same job alot better w/ 45 more cubes.
people here in this community are sensitive, so I won't call it junk, but if anyone is going to build a motor for there car for PERFORMANCE, there are better options if sticking with a Gen I small block.

305's are junk (yes, you did say it).
TPI is junk.
Let's face it, pretty much everything the factory put out was junk with regard to performance (you can make a reasonable argument to the contrary with regard to LT1's and LS1's, but we're a 3rd gen Board here).
Regardless of what you start with, you are going to have to make serious modifications in order to get "real" performance out of it. But, that can be done with a 305, that can be done with TPI, and in some cases that may be your only choice (read: Emissions) unless you go with the aforementioned LT1 or LS1.
How "good" something is, or how close it is to being "junk", is really too subjective to be able to answer definitively.

i can agree to that. it's just that outside of here nobody soups up a 305, unless it's a g-body.
there are a million combos you can run with, fuel injected or not.
I hate to be negative, but having a new GTO, and the old trans am, it just makes the shortcomings feel much stronger.

Just wondering.
Why is it that a 305 is junk and yet Ford guys make 400+hp on a regular basis with a 302.
I know that the 302 rod to stroke ratio is a little better than a 305 but the displacement is the pretty much the same.

The 5.0 is a 4" bore by 3" stroke engine vs. the 3.736" bore by 3.48" stroke of the 305 SBC. The heads have 4 bolts per cylinder vs. the 5 bolts per cylinder of the Gen I/II SBC, which keeps bolts from getting in the way of ports. Those two factors lead to better breathing in the 5.0 vs. the 305.
Ever heard of a 5.0 blowing a head gasket? Ever heard of a 5.0 block splitting down the middle? It's always a trade-off.
