305 TPI to Bill Mitchell 454 SB swap questions

Alright, I am swapping my 305TPI out of my IROC with the 454 SB from Bill Mitchell. Since I will have my 305 out, I'm trying to get an idea of what I need to do to prep for it. I also want to switch to a tubular K-member and dont know what to get. I read all this about LS1's, BBC swaps, and how the LS1 is diffrent somehow. I just dont know what to get. I know its a real general question, but mabey I can get some Ideas. Thanks

External dimensions should all be the same for any SBC, even the aftermarket large displacement ones. It souldn't be any different than any other SBC swap. I'd say you're going to need custom large tube headers. 1-3/4" primary tubes would be a minimum. 1-7/8" would be prefered.

Your also going to need a 12bolt or 9in rear end swap. A seriously modded 700R-4 with all the bells and whistles or maybe just get a turbo350. 454 cubes is a huge differnce.Big Block guys will know what tranny is best for a 454SBC. It is going to twist that car to hell. I would put a cage in it. Is the car a t-top car? I went from the stock L-69 305-ZZ4 350 in my 87 monte ss and I have stress cranks starting to show between the back of the t-top where it meets the door window and my car is full framed.Plus just for saftey reasons you might want a cage. I guees at the lowest you will run 475hp and 600hp max with a lot of torqe.Good Luck

I kinda figured I needed a suspension upgrade. Some SFC's and whatnot, but I never knew that a rollcage strengthened also. I guess it kind of makes sense. As far as for the rear end, yea, I planned on doing a whole new drivetrain. Beefed up tranny (I haven't decided if I want manual or automatic), driveshaft and rearend. Its gonna cost a pretty penny, but will be worth it when I am done. Hell, its my dream car right? Why not go for it? I planned on going with a moser 12 for the rear. Probably gonna install that summer of 07 when I get back to the states. Then there is just that pesky problem of disk breaks all around ha ha.

Without some serious chassis upgrades you could probably blip the throttle on that 454 and pop the windshield out.

Are you suggesting putting a frame underneath the car? That kind of "serious" chassis upgrade?

That would your best bet if you dont want to add a rollbar or cage in your car.

Plus with a proper frame under our cars, they will handle much better.

Everything that has been mentioned above, particularly the cage, probably along with other modifications such as sub-frame connectors.

With as much power as you are going to have, you need someone who knows what they are doing. I'd probably start with someone who is capable of installing an NHRA legal cage (good luck finding someone like that in Germany). DO NOT go with someone who is going to weld in muffler tubing (you'd be surprised how many shops will do that).

And, by the way, stock Camaros, because they are so front heavy, are extremely unstable at anything over about 100 mph.
