2.8-5.7 (well, 5.9-6.0) Tranny Q
Hey guys, i am building a 350 (well, 359-360 ... 350 bored .060 over) engine and i'm going to toss it into my 89' Camaro. It is a 78' engine from a race car. I am taking the block and putting almost everything new in it... except rods, rods are still great. Now, the Tranny Q... i know the v6 tranny 700r4 (auto) doesn't bolt right up to the v8. what company do you guys recommend for a bellhousing to bolt up and what type of bellhousing? or can anyone else explain a little more on what i need to do? I have searched already, do i need to search harder?
Oh yeah, it's going to from mpfi v6 to carb v8. i already have all of the info for fuel and most of the stuff for the computer that i know of... also i will need to put a shift kit in the trans - so that i don't have to use my computer... or do i need to modify the computer? I think the v8 used to use a powerglide trans... but i want to keep my 700r4 because i just got it rebuilt in march. i'm also putting vortec heads on it.

I'm doing the 173-350 swap too, and from my research you'll either have to swap cases (your 700R4 guts to a V8 Case) or use a V8 700R4. If you swap cases, some parts still won't work on a V8 so you still have to replace stuff.
I never though it made much sense to have two different versions of the same transmission but this is GM, alot of stuff they do doesn't make sense
It's not a matter of swapping bellhousings like the T-5.
someone may be able to chime in with more info on the subject, good luck with the build.

there is more than 2 versions of the 700. you can get a v-8 700 and have it rebuilt with upgaded parts. your stock v-6 parts arent going to last anyway. the stock 700 v-8 parts wont last to any abuse either. i would say that if you plan to go higher in HP then you should convert to th350 now before you waste money on the 700. i can get a 350 built by a local perf shop with the tq for 1000-1200. a comparable 700 would be close to 1800-2000. if you just plan to keep the hp reasonable and not beat on it the 700 will get you some mpg.

thanks for the input guys. I'll just trade my rebuilt v6 700 or a rebuilt v8 700... i have a buddy that rebuilds these transmissions a lot and has some extra's lyin around.
