86 Firebird, *evil laughter*

So, after the dealer selling the Camaro I was going to buy, my sights have fallen on a different car:

http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/pts/239750157.html

So, this project will have to be done as cheaply as possible. I assume that it is usually cheaper to junk the seized engine and put a new one in than to try and save the damaged one. My family has a large garage, and I am aloud to use it, but my parents don't want to help me much, this would be MY project.

I have never pulled the engine out of anything larger than a dirt bike, and was wondering just how difficult it will be to put a new engine in. There are about 2 zillion junkyards around here, so finding an engine for cheap wont be hard, but what should I look for? Also, I want to put a V8 in, and like I said, I have never done this before. Will the tranny work with a V8? What would it cost to rent an engine lift?

How hard is it to pull a donor engine out while the donor car/truck is sitting in a junk yard?

My parents wont let me bring home a parts car in addition, which would be ideal.

I have a small truck that gets 30mpg, and that is my daily driver. This would be the car I take on dates, as well as an occasional trip to the race way for some auto cross/drag racing. After I have the car, I am hopping to not have to spend more than $800 in order to get it running.

Most junkyards will have a crane dealie, for pulling motors. If it's a u-pull, bring someone who's done it before, to help you. If not, let the guys working there deal with it. Price it all out first.
I'd recommend a 350 V8 from a granny car, with relatively low miles. If you can, ask to hear it run at the JY. Then just slap it into your car, once you get it running to stock specs, perfectly, then worry about hot rodding it. Just getting it running will be enough hassle for now

Im prolly going to pull-a-part it, so I can get it cheap, but what do I use to get it out of their car and into the bed of my pickup? Whats a good car to target?

I refuse to use an automatic, does it matter if the doner car was a manual or an auto?

And yes, V8 camaros and Firebirds out here in *******-ville means all the women you know what to do with!

You can put anything into anything, as long as you can fabricate it.

However, manual transmission from an automatic should be a bolt-on change, except maybe cutting a hole in the center console for the shifter (may need to be wider than the auto permits) and making space for the clutch pedal.

I only wish I would have known Camaros were chick magnets in high school

How hard is the fabercation? Im learning to weld (doesnt mean im any good) and have an abundance of scrap steel.

No, you missunderstood what i meant with the manual, the engine is a 350 from a automatic truck, would it bolt to the stock tranny for a V6 firebird?

Around here, all you got to do is race a mustang and win, then all the woman want you.

Also, can a non T-top car be converted? How difficult is it?

Swap the bellhousing on the Firebird to bolt it up to your 350.

having it survive behind a 350 is another matter...
