Ive got an 87 trans am. When i first got the car a few months ago on the undersection of the hood it said 5.0, 305 so i assumed thats what it was. Last night i was puttin a new battery in and i noticed some small writing on anote under the original number, it said 350-18436572. I know the car was originaly a 305 but i cant figure out if the moter was swopped to a 350 or not because i cant see the id number on the engine. The stock exhaust also sounds alot louder than a 305 engine. Can anybody help me or give me some info? I Really have no idea and dont have the tools to take the engine out because my dads garage is being rebiult.

You need to get the casting numbers from the block. Behind the engine on the bellhousing flange there will be numbers. It is the horizontal/ rounded surface behind the distributor. On the drivers side it should say 5.0LG or 5.7LG on the passenger side it says the casting numbers.

This is the only way to know for sure without tools :P

Sheesh, now you tell me. Had I've known, I would have written a note under my old L98 just before I sold it indicating "1000-HP Titanium 400-SBC". Could have cleaned up, big time....

Like the others pointed out, such writing should be considered fluff. The only way you'll know for sure, is to pull the actual numbers from the block. Either that, or simply dyno it (anything over 200 horsepower leads us to suspect a 350)...!

If the oil dip stick is on the drivers side it is likely a 350, and your better off. If it is on the passenger side then it is likely a 305, and your still okay.

87 and newer 305's and 350's have passenger side dip sticks. The casting numbers tell the whole truth.

If the dipstick is missing you have blowby lol
