(I started a new thread, rather than tag on to the one where you posted this.)
First question is: "Emissions?" Yes or no makes a lot of difference with regard to where you go from here.
Next is, "What 305 do you have? What transmission?" Most likely you will need significant EFI upgrades in order to run a 400. The typical 400 swap goes to carb, which is not emissions legal. So, that's why the first question is so important.
What do you plan to do with the car? Do you have the 400 yet? How's your budget?

Now, a '73 La Mans would have a Pontiac engine in it. I'm not saying "Don't put a Pontiac engine in a 3rd gen," because there's a whole sticky about it at the top of this forum. However, if you have to go through emissions, forget it, because Pontiac engines didn't exist anymore in the 3rd gen era, and that's Rule #1 for emissions. And, I've never heard of a Pontiac version of a Super Ram, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. Neither your TPI nor transmission would fit a Pontiac engine.
However, if a Chevy 400 was swapped into the Le Mans, that's a different ballgame, but there are still issues to work out.
So, let's establish the basics before we spend any more time sweating the details.
