305 build

First off hello

My brother is on here a lot so I figure I give it a shot. I have an IROCZ with an LG4, and I would like to build it up. I know a 350 will get more bang for your buck, but this may or may not end up in an S10. If I am happy with the fun daily driver preformance in the camaro..

Looking online (And knowing that anything on a 305 will work on a 350 and vice virsa) I came into intrest of this combo kit.

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...0+&appfilter=1

Now I know that those are a guessed HP rating, my question is what will you think the hp may actually be on the 305, with Edel. RPM Preformer Intake. Also should I use a 600 or 650 cfm carb. (Holly dp of course )

Thanks a bunch,

IROCKERZ

Welcome aboard thirdgen.org. What year is the car/engine?

That's a lot of cheese for a 305. And won't make 350 HP on a 305. It's a pretty lame cam to boot.

Take a look at this thread on the FAQ forum. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/faq-...5-engines.html
You don't need to spend anywhere near that kind of money for the engine parts to get 350 HP out of a 305, and it can be done with the stock heads, carb and distributor (and computer controls). Most of the money needs to be spent on the exhaust.

If this is to be a race-only car, then you can justify the DP, otherwise the q-jet will support the same power (peak power, at least).

The car was built in 1986, mid year I believe.

350 HP on stock heads, carb, and distributor? Thanks for the link .

1986 was a very good model year.

Of course the stock heads need porting and machining for larger valves, but yes, stock heads. My heads are World replacements, but there isn't a big difference between them and stock.

As for the cam, when I did a search 2 came up. Which one is the one you were describing? I'm guessing its the second one.

For a 305, you want the 58cc chamber heads WRL-042650-1. The price is for each. And, figure on some clean-up porting (at least, it was necessary in 2001). I was planning on having all parts ready to go in when I pulled the engine out of the car, so I decided to go with new heads, port them, and try to get it running again within a week.

The cams you linked are hydraulic roller lifters. You want hydraulic flat tappet, since the factory rollers didn't start until 1987. The one I used was called Powermax 2050 Compucam back in 2001. They appear to have changed their designations now, so it's CRN-114142 (cam & lifters). I had planned a build-up using an '87 roller lifter block with a ZZ4 cam, when I discovered the block was cracked, I shifted gears and went back to building the '86 block, which meant flat tappet. I was looking for the closest thing to the ZZ4 in lift and duration, which netted me that cam. It will pull past the RPM range shown on the description in a 305. You will need a higher stall torque converter, though, as it doesn't have much guts down low. 2500 if you want to come on well on the street, 3000 if you want to run it on the strip.

You will need good-flowing exhaust. Assume headers and high-flow exhaust all the way back. You didn't say anything about emissions, I'll assume that isn't a problem. Everything in my sig was on the 305 with the exception of the cam (remember, I used the 2050 in the 305, and now have the ZZ4). Use '86-'90 TPI single cat application exhaust parts - that's the good stuff. You'll also need a better air cleaner, dual snorkel seems to work best all around. Again if no emissions, a Performer RPM spreadbore intake (no EGR version available) would complement the rest of the system better than a Performer.

Well I guess I was off a bit with the cam.

As for emissions, they are not a problem where I live (Florida) but I would prefer to set it up as if there are, just incase I move.

The 2500 stall torque converter is sitting on the mail truck on its way home, I figured as much that I will need a little upgrade on that. My trans is going to be rebuilt as well (18X,XXX miles on it).

I'll go check the yards for the dual snorkel, if I cant get one or the parts to fabricate one myself, I may just get a cowl hood and be done with it.

On the exhaust, 1 in 1 out flows better than 1 in 2 out, correct?

Thanks,

IROCKERZ

Generally speaking (such as same size inlets), yes. You'd need to give specific examples to be able to make that an absolute.

Single in/dual out was the one concession to form that I made. But, I figured the 305 wouldn't suffer because of it. With the 350 now, I'm starting to reconsider.

The combo I suggested would pass emissions muster (with the possible exception of CA - 2055 headers are not CARB certified for carb'd engines). In fact, I went through Colorado enhanced emissions inspection and testing twice with the 305 combo, no issues passing. In fact, the first time the emissions tech said, "Good job. Congratulations!"

One last thing I am worried about (One major reason why I dont want a suped up 350) Both of my cars have T-Tops. With building this 305 up and adding SFC'S Should I expect anything to go wrong? I really don't want to put a cage in, so my future kids can sit in the back and enjoy a ride around town.

Re: 305 build

You will be fine with just subframe connectors. People are running high 11 with them and no cage and no problems.
