350 BARE BLOCK worth it?
350 BARE BLOCK worth it?
So I met a guy with a bare 350 block that has had machine work done to it. Boiled out, Shaved, Squared, and Lined Bored .30 over. it has never been used has just been sitting in bags sealed from the weather. He does not have any recipts to prove it thou. Also included are vortec heads. He is asking 600OBO for it all, because he does not want to lose too much money from the machine work.

Re: 350 BARE BLOCK worth it?
Build a fun streetable 12sec or less car. I'm just looking for opnions.
It does save me a trip and time from the machine shop.
If 600 is too much how much would YOU GUYS think I should offer?

Re: 350 BARE BLOCK worth it?
depending on your plans. block worth 200.00
heads are they stock? they will need to be machined for higher lift and better springs at the least to go along with your 12 sec plans.this will not be cheap.
It all boils down to what you are after.

2-piece rear main seal, non-roller cam block. It might be worth $600 with the heads, but you're a long way away from a running engine. Without a doubt, verify the cylinder bore size.
Cam bearings & freeze plugs, main and rod bearings, crank, rods, pistons, rings, oil pump, pickup screen & drive shaft, oil filter adapter, cam, lifters, pushrods, timing set, oil pan, dip stick, timing cover, valve covers, fuel pump mount plate or blockoff plate, full gasket set, Vortec intake, damper, flexplate/flywheel. Whew, that's quite a list!
Since it needs a complete rotating assembly, anyway, a 383 kit would be tempting. More clearancing required, external balance damper and flexplate/flywheel needed. Otherwise, roughly the cost of a 350.

I talked to the guy again, and after doing a search on the casting numbers, I think(not 100% sure) that the block and heads were out of a truck. He said he will sell the block for 450$.. still worth it?

Tell you what - you buy them both for $500, I'll buy the heads off you for $50 for the pair.

Sounds like the laundry list for my Iron Duke - V8 swap. I decided to go with a crate motor so I wouldn't have to worry about the internals...yet. I just have to worry about replacing everything else!

Re: 350 BARE BLOCK worth it?
Yeah, $450 sounds a little too high for just a machined block!! Does the block have cam bearing in it, cause that would be another trip to the machine shop unless you have the tools to put them in.
When I got my old 350 that needed rebuilt, I only paid $125 for the complete engine (had a spun rod bearing and it ruined the crank) but a good deal! Now that I think of it, the only thing that I ended up reusing from that engine was the block, oil pan, timing cover, balancer and distributor hold down
lol

Re: 350 BARE BLOCK worth it?
i think those heads would be worth more than the block. He was asking 600 for all, and only 450 for the block? If youre having trouble deciding, call up a local machine shop, ask em how much it would cost to have that stuff done, and make ur offer based on that. I think its a little high personally for a BARE block. you have alot of work ahead of you.
