lt1 power?
As of now ive got an 87 trans an lb9 with an auto trans. I love the low end torque but after that its basicly done. I was lookin around and have been hering some goods things about the lt1 swaps so i have a few questions. First off, how much of a power increase would i feel, im lookin for alot of low and midrange power, basicly a fast 0-60. Another thing im concerned about is the sound, i love how my engine sounds and im worried that the lt1 wont sound deep like my car right now. and just any other basic comments on the engine. thanks

Re: lt1 power?
LT1 = 275hp 345lbft torque
LS1 = 325hp 350lbft torque
L98 = 225hp 345lbft torque (if I rememer correctly)
I love my LT1, had I had the money, and all the extra money in the world, I would have done an LS1 swap, but still wouldn't trade my LT1 for an L98.
The LT1 will sound totally different than the LB9 that's in the car.

Re: lt1 power?
Does it sound good? and how easy was the swap, some people have told me that it only took them a day or two to finish the entire thing. And one more thing, Does it have good low end torque because i really dont want to sacrifice that. sorry for all the questions i just dont want to make the wrong choice.

Re: lt1 power?
The car ran 9.30 in the 1/8th spinning through 1st, 2nd and me missing 3rd gear with a 3.70 gear in the car. I have always hated the way a 3rd gen sounds and mine sounds nothing like a 3rd gen, and I like it.
As for the swap, 8 wires to hook up, just read up on all the threads, and you will do fine, set aside about 2-3 weekends to finish it up right. I could probably do it in about a week now since I've done one before maybe less if it's an auto (I did a 6-speed swap)

Re: lt1 power?
Thanks alot klortho, i was just checkin up cause i dont feel like makin a 1500 dollar mistake right now, im only 17. I found a lt1 with an manual 6 speed out of a 96 with 85,000 miles on it. Its a wrecked car but no damage to the front so the guy told me 800 for the engine and 300 for the tranny. Oh ya, and are there any other parts i should consider swapping out cause the guy wont get rid of the whole car but he said hell go cheap on any other parts i need. Thanks
Re: lt1 power?
$300 for the tranny?! if you don't pick that up, I WANT that transmission
It's a big undertaking for sure, but I wouldn't hesitate to do the LT1 swap. just keep in mind you're going to need a fairly decent budget, there is a LOT of little nickle and dime stuff to get to finish it up. yeah its only going to cost, in your case, $1100 for the engine/trans, but you're going to spend probably another $500-$1000 installing it.

Re: lt1 power?
Well, considering that the LT1 has probably twice the torque that the little whimpy LB9 (I know it isn't double, but it's a whole bunch more) I don't think you'll have a lack of torque.

Re: lt1 power?
I did the swap as well, and as stated the nickel and dime stuff gets up there. I pulled the tbi 305 out and replaced with a LT1 and I wouldnt trade for anything. I was looking at a 01 T/A and there was not alot of difference that I could feel as far as power, the LT1 will pull all the way to redline unlike the tpi's and tbi's that run out of steam pretty quick. The low end torque is unbelieveable, it will lite them up on demand. Good luck and everything you need to know is on this site, I got everything from here to do mine.

Re: lt1 power?
I love my lt1, I ran stock with the 6sp 13.3 at 105, it could have made 12's if I would have drove it like i stole it, LOL. Well it had a few bolt ons and a mild tune to the computer, the same one that Klotho is using. anyway to make my point you will not regret it at all.

Re: lt1 power?
for that price you cant beat it, thats a great deal, and you wont be disappointed with the results, the feelign of grabbing 2nd gear and have the car go sideways is one of the best feeligns in the world, im building a pretty good 454 and putting a th350 behing it and there is some of me that wishes i would have bought my firend totaled lt1 6speed for 2 grand and use that to swap into my car. the lt1 is a GREAT engine to do budget stuff on, they love nitrous and with just bolt ons they are plenty fast for the street. this is a vid of my friends car, thats just a cat back on the car,

Re: lt1 power?
you would have to be crazy if you had the money an didnt buy that. 300 for a t56 is just nuts.
