old style v8 block

there is an online classifieds add is st louis, mo where i stay and someone is selling what they say to be " an old Firebird v8 motor. the year is somewhere from the mid 60's to the early 70's."

does anyone know possibly what size motor this is? they are selling it for $50 with a tranny and say all most of the parts are there. is there any way i can take the tranny somewhere and have it tested to see that it works before i mount it in my car? let me know any precautions you might advise

If it's mid 60's early 70's more than likely it's a Pontiac 350

"it does not have valve covers, rockers, springs, or rods. the top manifold is not there either" but does come with the stock tranny. does anyone know what tranny it might be (hoping its the 700R4). Is the motor still worth it for a rebuild

For that year, there's no way it's a 700R4, they were out in 83 or 84 for F-bodies, not to mention you won't have the torque arm mount. It's probably a BOP (Buick, Olds, Pontiac) Bellhousing Turbo 350.

If it's a Pontiac V8, it'll cost more and take more work to rebuild and get it put in your car than it would for a small block Chevy. I'd pass on it.

I'd read the sticky at the top of the forum

Having problems making clickable.

Cut and paste this in your browser:

Shoot, better than any Chevy 350, had I been able to do anything with a Pontiac, I would have one of those under the hood of the old '86 I had.

There's nothing wrong with it for an application that was originally available with it, just for my taste it's not worth the trouble fitting it into an thirdgen compared to an SBC.

Re: old style v8 block

would a shop install a motor in a car that didnt orginally come in that car. or basically would a shop put a 350 in my 85 firebird? is this legal and likely to pass emmisions?

Re: old style v8 block

Depending on where you are, it will not pass emissions. An engine swap needs to be done with an engine the same year, or newer than the car and have all the emmisions equipment that came on the engine installed.
Again, depends on where you live.
