Ok i have a 87 z28 with a 305 5 litre thats blown
my question is, can i drop a larger engine in it and still pass smog?
cuz i have access to a 327 and a 350 that i could drop in but i dont want to do it unless i know i can pass smog.

... as long as EVERY hose, EVERY wire, EVERY vacuum line, EVERY device, EVERY sensor, EVERY solenoid, EGR, the cat, AIR, EFE, the stock air cleaner, and so on .... is all hooked up and working, it'll most likely sail right through. Asuming that it also blows good numbers, which is largely determined by the cam that you put in it.

IIRC Sacramento is an "enhanced" area'; much as the San Diego/ Oceanside area was, when I lived out there. Calls for extra vigilance and rigor when it comes to compliance.

Re: Will i pass smog?

If I could pass my L-98 with LO-3 injection off as a LG-4 he should have no trouble passing with a 350

Re: Will i pass smog?

That may be all well and good wherever you are; but where I was (Oceanside area), my car failed for not having the heated air hose that goes from the exhaust manifold up to the air cleaner snout. Yes, you read it right: they flunked me, I had to go to the store and buy & install it, and come back and pay AGAIN (fortunately a reduced rate, but still.....) for THAT. That's how **** they are in some places. Other places may be different.

Ummm, no.... only in places like "enhanced" areas in California.

Which you evidently aren't in, because they didn't do much of a visual to your car, it would seem. I could be wrong (well I am wrong, but I mean, mistaken about this particular thing) they must not have checked to see if ..... oh, your mixture control solenoid, let's say .... was hooked up and working.

Re: Will i pass smog?

I got failed in northern cal because my fuel tank filler was for older cars. I put an older pickup bed on my 1980 Dodge to get rid of the flat bed. I used the fuel filler that cam with the bed.

Because I didn't have the small size hole that restricted the larger pumps from going into the tank - they failed me.

You can't even find the large size pump nozzle anywhere in CA, except for truck stops using diesel, and they failed me anyway. The visual was gone over with a fine tooth comb.

If you don't have a personal relationship with the test facility, that engine had better look 100% factory stock...
----------
On another note, we were able to sneak a 400 small block through the test with TBI, because we took great care to hide the details. He didn't notice that the dipstick was on the wrong side for a 90 305. We had everything else installed and it looked right.

Painted black, he couldn't see the freeze plug discrepancy and he didn't try to take numbers off of the engine...

Re: Will i pass smog?

Ok I have a couple more Questions

I blew my engine due to no oil, yes i know I am a retard I have heard it over and over again and i am suffering for it. I actually filled it up however it sat for about a month and i had a massive leak that I didnt pay attention to and then it went kaput but aside from the point its knocking and it doesn't accelerate to well, i took of my valve covers and i didnt notice any damage to the top of my engine, so i assume its the block which i need to replace along with my pistons if that is the problem, however i dunno that much about cars but if i where to replace my block i would have to just slap a 305ci block on right? I couldnt just do a 350 with larger pistons could i? i would need a different cam and cylinder heads right? and if i where to replace it with a 305 block would it matter what kind of block???

I currently have a 350 block sitting at my house that I have to my disposal but i only have 600 dollars any ideas on what i should do?

Most likely it's the crank & bearings that are damaged, not the heads.

You can put a 305 or 350 shortblock under your heads. Since yours is an '87, it would be nice to get an '87-up block. You shouldn't have problems with a properly tuned 305 or 350.
