Vortec Truck Motors?
Vortec Truck Motors?
So I just picked up this 91 RS the other day almost for nothing, and I'm getting pretty stoked about all the possibilities for this thing. I was thinking at first that I would just build the 305 with some heads and a cam and then supercharge it but....
I read a budget build up on here somewhere where the guy started out with a longblock from a 96+ truck. Now this is really intriguing to me because I have found that a GM Goodwrench NEW longblock is less than $2K and makes over 300 HP and gobs of torque.
If I was to go this route would I just have to swap over my TBI intake onto it and the accesories? What about my transmission? It seems like it would be a good match since the Truck motors redline at like 5K which is only slightly less than my 305.
Also I am a little unclear about how to control it. Could I purchase a chip for my 1991 computer or would I need something completley different?
And lastly, how much power can a stock 4 bolt main block take before cracking pistons and/or snapping rods? I think I saw 500 HP is that reasonable because I REALLY want to have a blower on this car at some point.
Thanks putting up with my newbness!

The information you're looking for is a sticky in the top section of the TBI forum. Look for "Budget 350".
Your transmission will bolt up to that longblock.
Stock limitations are more RPM than power. You don't want to spin more than 5500-6000 RPMs regularly. 500 HP NA out of a 350 requires a lot more RPMs than that.
