Welcome aboard thirdgen.org.

Opinion? Remove the 305, get a Vortec spreadbore intake, put the 305 control stuff on the L31.

What's the question?

Turn the bolts. Done.

You'll need a different intake manifold, is the only thing; Vortec heads have the intake ports in a different place. I'd suggest the Edelbrock Performer for Vortecs. You might also need an electric fuel pump, as I don't think that block will support your mechanical one; I'd mount it on the frame, right by the engine, where the existing lines can hook up to it.

Re: Newbee

I am also looking to beef up the L31, any ideas as far as Crank, cam and so on. I have worked on cars all my life, but it has been only maint. I have no idea as far as what cams work with what, so any advise I can get will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Newbee

An L31 long block is a great place to start. It has powdered metal rods, and a decently strong cast crank to go with it. You should just use what you have now and then go over to DIY PROM and learn how to tune that thing. Tuning is power!

Re: Newbee

it currently has a spun barring. So the crank is need of some TLC. Also I am not running any computer or fuel injection. Wanting Old School! (Carb)
