That's why I don't come here much. Too many guys with fast 305 TPIs.

Guy. You're way to worried about hp to be installing a motor.

No, net flywheel; meaning as-installed in the car with intake, exhaust, and accessories (water pump, alternator). The transmission and rear end will suck up another 15-20%.

If you buy an engine that is claimed to be 400 HP, you can be sure that's "gross" flywheel horsepower, meaning measured at the flywheel with open headers, velocity stack on top of a carb, no alternator, electric water pump with power supplied by the facility, and fuel pressure supplied by the facility. Putting air cleaner, alternator, water pump, and exhaust on it in the car will drop you about 20%. At the flywheel.

The drivetrain will pull out another 15-20%, so now you're down to about 260-275 HP at the wheels.

Re: Should i go Ram Jet, LT1,LS1,LS2, or TPI?

you mean as for injection? well as evryone has been saying TPI is cheapest to start with then LT1 then LS1. So it is really what you can afford and what comes with the engine. just put in a TPI and get it over with. LS1 and even LT1 are better but you need experience, time and tons of cash.

So just get the TPI and if you have a little more cash and some time get the LT1. leave it at that.

Not to fan the flames, but getting TPI now will leave less money for getting LT1 or LS1 later.

The "better" idea for injection is not TPI. Both LT1 and LS1 are sequential port injection, a good step up from the TPI batch injection. There is a point at which getting HP out of a TPI will cost about as much as LT1 or even LS1 - that point comes somewhere around 400 HP or so NA. And, fuel efficiency will not be as good.

So, short-term savings, long-term expense; or short-term expense, long-term savings. Pick your poison.

But, since the goals were pretty much grabbed out of the air, TPI isn't necessarily a bad choice.

Yea, im going to save a little more and look into the LT1 or LS1. Im not going to waste all my money right now. I just got a new job and will be able to save more. Which is better over all? LT1 or LS1? Like which is faster, easier to mod, better quality, over all better and let me know why. lol

I dont know if i want to stay v6, for car shows thats a little weird. What kinda power you get out of the 3.8 turbo or other 6's?

Overall the LS1 will be better for performance cost aside.

For up to 440 or so rwhp the LT1 is better on a cost basis, above that i'd start looking at the LS1.

Agreed.

LSx engines are superior to any other chevy motor. A 6L iron truck block with factory L92 heads and a big cam made 550hp on the dyno. That's impressive. The new corvette makes a streetable 505hp.

But as stated, it's more expensive since it's newer... and better

the Trans am turbo (3.8L) can beat the L98. Did 13s in the 1/4 i think? Look up firstfirebird, he currently building a 3.4L/3500 hybrid. He looking for 250 or more flywheel hp.

Yep. High 13's I believe.

Here's the equation

Money * CID = HP

So the less cubes you use, the more money it takes to make it to go fast (disregarding factors like stripping your car down to nothing to save weight etc). You put a turbo on a 572 big block you'll make more power than a turbo V6.

I'm sure people can make all sorts of little arguments about specific cases, but in general, that equation holds true.

i know but my suggestion is just to go fast for less money

I can't say that I've ever seen "turbo Trans Am" and "less money" used in the same sentence before.

There's another problem with that "Money x CID = HP" formula - in real life, it isn't linear. The CID part pretty much is, but x-more $'s won't yield x-more HP.

Re: Should i go Ram Jet, LT1,LS1,LS2, or TPI?

I wont say any comment to be degregating and would prefer not to be flamed, and know it has already been discussed.

Its obvious that he knows little about performance/engines..no offense, but this is true.

He is going to have to have a shop to install such a thing.

So were adding on a hefty cost.

I have only just slightly looked up the ramjet 350, and ill agree..its pricey, and i havent really went out and seen how fast or how its realife application is, only because so far ive found little.

However, from what ive seen, it looks to be an easy swap.

Ive been where this guy is,
LS1's are fairly cheap, fast, but to install is quite a bit of fabrication, worth it, but expensive...i dont see this guy coming through with it, because an ls1 on ebay out of a 4th gen or GTO or corvette is generally 5k w/ or w/o a transmission, depending on mileage. I know this from searching for a project 240ss idea that is still in hopes :P

But, the LT1 swap i myself has considered. the price is right, and i understand its easier to install. Not to mention its a great engine..LSx's are great engines as well, dont get me wrong.

But an LT1 swap, is again, a much cheaper application, when your 19 years old and have barely enough money to get through the month.

He doesnt want carb, and a L98TPI i dont mind. i have one in our c4 and i think its a great engine, but , this guys looking for alot, and i cant vouch for how much you can get out of a L98 even with modifications..ive read alot and ive read not so much, so i can not say.

So i just think the ram jet has been overlooked personally. correct me if im wrong, i havent looked to far into it, and am going to after i post this message. But its EFI, pricey yes, but it seems to be easier to install then everything listed..and its got a decent power output. Much more then id say this guy needs. Looks? you can make it look good I'm sure.

But i just think were forgetting, he wants to have this done at a shop. Now, i havent been to a shop too often, but 1500$ extra makes almost all the applications of LT1 and LSx an extra tack on.

Id say the TPI and ramjet(from what knowledge ive seen, it fits in like a 1st gen SBC...if im wrong please do correct me) is the best bet, because he can do that himself if he buys a junker, or save the money from doing like said before, L98 out of a wrecked is going to be cheaper, because everything is there, no fab. and if he had the room, could learn how to do the swap and use the parts from the wrecker and make life much easier and chepaer! Maybe im expressing my dreams onto other people who knows haha

But its just my opinion. Correct me where im wrong, im no mechanic, only working my way to have the knowledge of one.

Thanks Thirdgen, and id love to see this guy have a nice car
