i am pulling my motor...when i lift the engine and try pulling it doesnt separate from the manual tranny...there are only 6 bellhousing bolts right? i see that there are a couple dowel pins..do these need to be knocked out? also i should be pulling straight forwards?

 

Yes there are 6 BH bolts.

No you don't need to knock the pins out; but you may need to pry the motor and trans apart a bit.

Be sure you do it in such a way that whenever they finally DO separate, the motor doesn't swing forward and punch through your AC condenser. I.e., don't put a whole bunch of pulling force on it and then start prying, lest you get an ugly surprise.

 

You did unbolt the torque converter correct?

 

Umm...not in a manual tranny.

 

Well, look at that...

Then with the manual, you'll want to make sure the input shaft slides out
fairly level.

I find it easier to remove the transmission as any angle between the transmission
and engine will add additional resistance against the disc.

Try engaging the clutch to free up the disc, it might help until the engine pulls away (which is not much as the plate will engage as the distance increases).

 

Hope you know I was just messin' around with you. I almost said the same thing until I re-read his post.

 

You know, a funny story. Picture a normal size cherry picker with a 454all accessories, intake, distributor everything, with a th400 bolted to it. All being pulled from a 80's chevy 1 ton dually pickup. It wouldnt come, wouldnt come, kept hanging on exhaust, etc. I had the whole front panel (header) panel off. When it came out, it practically lept out of the truck, and then proceed to turn the cherry picker over. I was holding onto the top of the boom, and it pulled me off my feet, a good 8 inches in the air. Which was cool, cause im 6.5ft tall and go 300lbs.

 

It's all good, I just assumed and should have read his sig., or profile.

 

Be sure you have a floor jack under the tranny to support it as you pull it apart.

 

The input shaft needs to slide out of the pilot bearing (seen them seized in) then out of the clutch splines. Alignment is usually critical, more so when installing.

It might be a lot easier to pull the engine and tranny out as a complete unit then split them when they're out of the car. The other option is to pull the tranny out first then pull the engine. There won't be anything supporting the tranny other than the rear mount once it's disconnected from the engine. The rear mount won't hold it up.
