406.. too much motor for car?

Might be buying this motor soon I could probably get it for 1200, 406 block, got a big cam and a big edelbrock carb on it. Saw it lift the front end of a monte carlo up. Owners guessing 450-500hp. I have a built 700r and 9bolt rear. Are my trans and rear going to last long at all with this motor? Also it might not draw enough vacuum for the brakes. Need opinions not sure if this motor is going to be streetable enough but I do know ill pretty much own the road with it. NEED EVERYONES OPINIONS and THOUGHTS!! I gotta make a decision soon

buy it, for 1200 that can lift a montes tires thats an insane deal, if you dont like it just sell it or de-tune it

Re: 406.. too much motor for car?

I know its a good deal hoping to get that price for it (asking 1500), but im fearing the possibility of premium gas, 10mpg, and no power brakes, and then blowing up my rear end and trans and twisting my body. It looked like it had some blow by though, puffing right out when I took a breather off, could be because it needs to be timed though. WHAT TO DO WHAT TO DO????? Im trying to rebuild my motor which we think was knocking because of a missing cam retaining plate, then the crank wont turn with the new bearings in it. And then theres another motor thats 2600 but its all new apart in boxes with a slightly used short block and thats like a 375hp combo for that. and all this in a race against time, gotta get my car out of neighbor's garage b/c he is moving and I can only get this engine by tommorow or maybe tuesday.

I'd say buy it and if it doesn work out you can at least sell it for what you paid for it easily

I wish I knew exactly what the cam specs are im hoping to find out exactly. trans was built by maddog i think the previous owner said, it definetly wasnt built for a 500hp motor. I'd definetly have to put subframe connectors in. Probably a matter of time before I blow up the rear end or trans. Slicks?? no this is gonna be a street car mainly that i might take to the track occasionally.

Well, for a street car today, can you afford 10mpg? I guess that's the question. If it's a running motor and you NEED to move the car, then buy the motor. It's cheaper than just about anything else out there at the moment and it'll be enough to get the car running and out of your neighbors garage. From there you can see if you like it or not. If it doesn't make enough vacuum, you can always install a secondary vacuum pump...or detune the motor with a different cam. Do you know if it's a roller motor or flat tappet? What year is it from?

Re: 406.. too much motor for car?

my best guess is it is a flat tappet, I wish i knew more info but the owner couldnt provide much, I will call him tommorow to try and get the most info I can from him. With gas at 4 bucks a gallon 10mpg isnt something I could really afford, but considering its a summer car and I dont drive that much, lets just say id be happy if it got 14mpg. The guy said the kid he bought it from sold it cos once the front end lifted up he was too scared of it, he said the kids got the receipts (which i wish i could get) and its over 8k in receipts, said the motor was built by jansens. It doesnt look like nothing special, dirty as hell but its big block power in a small block package, im definetly considering this and im gonna have to sleep on it. Both my neihbors think i should get it, my dad said I should sleep on it. But like you said, it would be a motor for now (of course id have to convert everything for a carb) then i could always sell it if i dont like it and drop my old motor back in when i rebuild it.

i would definately buy it, putting in a smaller cam is no problem and cheap, worse comes to worse re-sell it and you will likely break even

and slicks because the better the car is hooking, the faster you will find your trans and rear in pieces

Re: 406.. too much motor for car?

OK I have a 406 that is rated at 455hp and I am trying to sell it at $1400 but went down to $1200 and no takers. Its got a large cam in it but don't know the specs. It would require premium gas for sure High compression 11.5:1.
From the sounds of this thread it should be getting interest but nothing really. It is complete from Carb to Pan? even has an HEI distributor. Block is dated 1971.
Is there something I should do to get some interest in this engine. Granted it isn't in a vehicle but still turns over by hand.
Thanks in advance for any advice on selling this. I do have it posted for sale here and there was some questions about shipping but no response lately.
