REMOVE ENG. FROM BELOW ???

O.K. here is the deal . i got "T" boned a month ago , severed the car in half . anyway i want to pull eng. & tranny for another camaro . rear of car is setting in the dirt . i have been wondering if it is possible to disconnect front cross member , tranny cross member , and lift off body . i saw an eng. removed from a 4th gen this way on powerblock tv . been wondering if its been done or is possible on a 3rd gen ??? i would be removing required stuff from front of eng. & possible entire front clip . been checking my g.m. and other books and seems like it is possible . ( 305 tbi & t5 ) anyone done this ??? is it possible ??? thanks in advance .

Re: REMOVE ENG. FROM BELOW ???

I think the front inner fenders are spot welded to the fire wall, the older 2nd gens were bolted on. The other major difference between the 3rd and 4th gens is the K member in the 4th gen is attached to macpherson coil over struts and on the 3rd gen the front spings rest between the lower control arms, which pivot from the sub frame.

Re: REMOVE ENG. FROM BELOW ???

They were installed from the bottom (at the factory) from what I was told.
I was able to remove an LT1 and trans together from the top, but it was a PITA.

Hold the motor up and unbolt the subframe and roll it out. Then you should beable to drop it out the bottom. We just took the sub out of a car and it looks like you should beable to drop it out the bottom. Not for sure though but with a cutting torch or sawzaw the front clip will come off.Good luck.

Re: REMOVE ENG. FROM BELOW ???

Ive done it this way over half a dozen times... Its the only way Ill remove/replace motors from f-bodies...

"front clip" wont come off like an older 1st gen car. You'll have to cut it at the firewall...but you gotta remove all the panels first.

If I remember right, there wasn't a whole lot left of your car Uncle Tom. I have to wonder if it'd be almost easier to just unbolt the engine, hold it in place, and cut the body away from it?

He may be right depending on what the car looks like.... The rear has to be up alittle in order to clear everything, unless you have an overhead hoist, or a fork lift or something that can lift up high. A saw-z-all can make short work of the sheet metal around the engine and all though.

Strip the good parts off and cut the rest away. Or lift it up...whichever you think is better for ya.
