my 454 build and swap.
well iv always wanted to make something like this. showing my progress each day.
well i wanted to start out with the very beginning. with the engine block.
well im even going alittle earlyer then that. buying my engine block.
i found a seller selling a 454 bare engine block. im going to go look at it and if its all good ill be buying the block tommorrow. iv looked everywhere for a 454 bare block for ages and i finnaly found one for $200. im not to sure if thats a good deal or not. i never bought a big block before. this will be my 1st big block engine.
well i emailed the fellow yesterday and asked him if he could get the casting number on the block and he emailed me about an hour ago with the numbers.
if anyone one of you kind fellows like to tell me alittle about this engine block using the casting numbers before i go ahead and buy the block tommorrow?
here is the casting number. #3999289

Re: my 454 build and swap.
72-78 454 2 bolt block used in cars and trucks. Pretty common casting.
Just like looking at any other block there are a number of things to look for. Has the block ever been bored out? Has it had a bearing spun in the mains? Is there any damage from throwing a rod etc.
A bare block shouldn't be worth more than $100 unless it's something special. If you're building a BBC, you want a complete engine. The more you have to buy to make a complete engine, the more expensive it will be.
I have all kinds of factory BBC parts picked up over the years. I have at least 3 blocks in my garage. The engine in my car is now 100% aftermarket.

Re: my 454 build and swap.
im going to mesure the bores on the block when i go check it out. ill talk to the fellow as well in seeing if i can get it cheaper. is there a way to check for cracks on the block with out taking it into a shop? i dont want to spend the money. find out its cracked. money down the drain. is there any common spots on the block that would crack?
if this isnt what im looking for then im going to check in the local paper and also on some local internet adds. this is where i found this engine block.
if this fails. ill probably look for a truck for fairly cheap and just remove the engine.
