305 tbi to 350 carb

i have a 305 throttle body in my 1990 RS. i cant find any new crate motors that are throttle body, so my only option seems to be to switch to carb.
other than pulling the old motor out and putting the new one in.
what else do i have to do to make the switch, and what does it usuallly cost?

any info would help

Re: 305 tbi to 350 carb

I did this swap several years ago and the power gains were amazing!!! The cost was going to be about the same to change out the head gaskets as it had blown in my 305TBI.

I say go for the swap. Just ensure that you have a good shop doing it where you can stay with them all the time on the progress. That was the only difficulty I had with mine and once it was sorted out (the first shop just stuck it in and didnt sort it out very well). Since then it has been awesome!!

Good Luck!!!

Your questions aren't making much sense.

You aren't likely to find a new crate engine that has a TBI on it. The engine I linked is a long block for TBI applications. It's a 350, if you want a 305 http://www.sdparts.com/product/12518...ateEngine.aspx . Hmmm, same price.

You can put a carb on that 350 crate engine if you like. Depends upon what you're trying to accomplish.

How much power depends upon what you do to support it. LO3 exhaust is as bad as the factory every did; you want power improvement, improve the exhaust.

Cost - have you read anything on the TBI forum yet? A bunch of good info about how to improve the system. How much it ends up costing depends upon what you end up doing - make a list, price it out. Are you asking how much it would cost to have someone do it for you? Well, double the cost of the parts, you'll be close.

What about a carb'd crate engine? There are more out there than you can shake a stick at. You need to be more specific, and even then, you could do the research yourself. More than likely you'll lose things you don't anticipate (like fuel economy) and wish you hadn't done it.

What exactly are you trying to accomplish here?

Re: 305 tbi to 350 carb

im trying to get more power, i wanna get rid of my 305 and put a 350 in.
my car is throttle body, all the crate engines i seem to see are carbed, is it a big deal to make the switch from throttle body to carb and will i loose alot of gas mileage?

i completely upgraded my exhaust system, and i got a little response from that. but no matter what i do, its not gonna match a carbed 350. so im wondering what crate engine to go with. and what are the problems ill run into from switching tbi to carb.

ive seen other people on here have success with the switch so i was wondering about how to go about it.

i was looking at that crate 330 HO deluxe kit.

You will lose fuel economy going to carb. Almost impossible to get around it. TBI can be made to run better, the aftermarket just hasn't supported it like other systems. However, the aftermarket (Holley) has used TBI as the basis for stand-alone EFI, they just went 4 bbl while they were at it.

The 330 HO is a decent engine. The "Deluxe" has a poor choice of a carb. The "budget 350" sticky on the TBI forum is very close to that engine - if you got the base 330 HO crate engine and did the rest that sticky talks about to the TBI, you'd have a decent running system with none of the disadvantages of carb (especially that Deluxe kit carb).

There is a tech article linked from the thirdgen.org homepage (tab above) that talks about the switch from EFI to carb.

The main problems with factory LO3 TBI were poor exhaust, lame cam, poor flowing heads, and a finicky speed density (MAP) control system. They are all fairly easy to fix (exhaust, cam, heads) or work with (speed density).

Re: 305 tbi to 350 carb

so really one of my main questions was, about going from tbi to carb, how hard is it to do and is is costly other than buying the new carbed motor.

There's a tech article linked from the homepage that details the job.

Carb, cable studs, intake manifold, distributor, gaskets, means to lock up the TCC - add it up, see what you think.

Re: 305 tbi to 350 carb

hey 5 7 kid, have you ever heard of theese ATK engines.
HIgh-performance-engines.com They make a GM 383 TBI stroker crate motor with 320 HP that they sell for 3395.00 its part number HP05, with my car being a 1990 305 Tbi, would that be as easy as pulling my motor out and putting that one in?
they seem like good motors.
lemme know if youve heard of them?
and if it would be that easy?

I vaguely recall hearing about an outfit that made big claims for TBI 350's & 383's. Seems it was an "If it seems too good to be true. . ." situation. I don't recall anyone saying they got or had one.
