Five7Kid, & The Other Engine Guru's, Help Me Decode This Engine....

Guys, recently got my hands on an '86 Z28, and although I plan on swapping in an entirely different small block, I'm very curious to know what was already swapped in there before I got my hands on it. The partial VIN number on the block behind the alt is definitely not the LG4 that the car originally came with, and the engine code itself is as follows....;

KO9 14 CTL

Ran a search on the web, and the only thing that I could find was the following information on four different possible engines with the letters CTL stamped on them; '70 350, '72 350, '75 400 and '78 305. I can't find anything relating to the other part of the code, and was hoping some of you guys might possibly be familiar with it. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...!

K = St. Catherines, Ontario engine plant
0914 = Sept 14

As you've already found, there are 4 different options for the suffix code CTL. Now you need to get the other numbers stamped where those are and get the block casting number to pinpoint the exact year of the block to narrow the choices.

Thanks Stephen, I'll check the area by the bellhousing right now and see what comes up. I was going to use the three freeze plug method on each side of the block to determine if it's a 400, but I remember being told that some 350's had the same thing. Lemme see what I can find....

Well if the casting says it's a 305 or 400 block then that eliminates all the other choices. If it's a 350 block, you'll need to get a year code to see exactly what it was from.
