305-350 swap
About a week ago i blew the motor in my 91 z28. The motor was a 305. I am unable to replace it myself so i took it to a trustworthy friend at a chevy dealership while I am out at college. The dealership wants to put in another 305 and wont do a 350 because they said they would need to replace to many sensors and replace a drive shaft along with alot of other stuff. From what i have read on this site it seems like everyone throws in a 350 from a 305 and doesnt have to many problems. So my questions is, is it really that difficult for a chevy dealership to put in a 350 and how do i convice them to do it? Also if anyone knows of any good crate motors that would fit in replacement for my TPI 305? thanks in advance.

Re: 305-350 swap
it is exactly the same install. A 305 TPI is exactly like a 350 TPI externally (sensors, injectors, etc. alittle different.)

If your car is TPI, put this in:
350 TPI
It's the best deal out there ... and with a 7-yr. warranty. Crate motors don't have that kind of backing. And speaking of crate motors, you can't even get a 305 crate motor anymore, so I don't know what kind of crap that dealership wants to throw in your car.
Take your car to someone who knows what they are talking about. I have just completed this swap myself (well, my mechanic has) and there is nothing to it. New knock sensor, new injectors, new PROM, I did a new balancer (although I don't think it's required), and that's about it.
You DON'T need a new drive shaft and the person that told you that is an idiot.
As far as the sensors go, everything else is plug-n-play. Everything will swap over from your 305.
Find a mechanic that doesn't work for "the man" and you'll be alright.
And while you're at it you might want to go ahead and throw some new exhaust on that thing. The stocker will choke a 350 pretty bad.

Re: 305-350 swap
With just the motor and no exhaust work and swapping over your stock TPI? I'd say about the same as stock: 245 @ the flywheel.
This place will port your heads for an extra $400 if you're interested. And if you upgrade your cam, TPI components, exhaust, etc. this motor can push close to 400 if you stack your parts right.
Oh, and you might as well upgrade your rear end gears also. Unfortunately, a motor swap is usually more than just swapping the motor. You don't HAVE to do anything to exhaust/rear end/tranny, but it's a good idea. Make sure your 700r4 (or is it a T5?) is in good shape.

Re: 305-350 swap
what kind of cam would you recommend that has a nice lumpy idle or muscle car sound...secondly how would the edlebrock performer intake match up and if i do change the cam out does anything else need to be changed with it or can the cam be done alone. One last thing what do you think about hooker super comp headers i already have hooker aero chamber exhaust...
