motor swap, bigger cam. five7kid this is for you!

engine...ok, i got the motor wired in, its carb'd. on top sits a holley street avenger 670 cfm electric choke vacuum secondary carb. stock bottem end, slight port work to the 60 cc 305 H.O. heads. a healthy cam (this is where the problem comes in) 292 duration around .550 lift. its a 350 in a 1992 camaro with a 700r4. because of the cam, i cant get er to idle below 1150. i adjusted the air/fuel screws and thats how i got it that low. but as soon as i turn the idle screw down a tad, it will idle for a second, then start to lose idle (not enough vacuum??) so i ordered a 4.5 powervalve and hoping that does the trick... i have hedmen headers full length. no exhaust yet. i took it down the road to the gas station, but to get it in gear you have to feather it cuz of the timing being off. but i cant set the timing because the vacuum advance seems to be kicked in.....

exhaust......to tune my exhaust.. put a peice of painted exhaust pipe off the headers and where the paint stops burning cut it and put mufflers there. thats what i heard, and for some reason it sounded logical. is that just me?

tranny....how bad will it hurt the transmission if the tv cable (or kick down) isnt connected and i manually shift it?

fuel.... i wired my fuel pump to a switch, it works fine, no complaints. but my fuel gauge dont work now, so idk what to do about that? any ideas?

At idle the powervalve does nothing.

For a cam that big, you're probably going to want unported vacuum for the advance. You'll probably want to run it without mechanical advance, too.

That's the trick to find out where to put your H or X pipe, not the mufflers. You'll find that fitment is a bigger concern than tuning though.

Depending on whether you have the TV checkball installed in your transmission or not, it'll either be very, very, very, very bad, or completely undriveable. The 700R4 absolutely can not be driven without the TV cable connected.

That's probably unrelated to your fuel pump wiring.

That combo doesn't sound well matched to me, you've got too much cam for the heads.

That cam is way to big for the engine. With ported vortecs and a .510/.520 lift roller, I am pushing it a little. Maybe a 268 comp would be better for you. Very good torque and mileage for a street car. My friend's s10 has that in a 383, he is at 425 hp. The parts all have to work together to get the most from the engine.

As for the timing, take off the dizzy cap, and check to make sure there is no binding. Block off the vacuum before you set the timing too. Try using timing tape to get it to around 30 - 32 degrees at around 3000 rpms if you want. Then just tune from there till it gets the most power.

(Impersonating five7kid): That's a federal offense to swap in an engine without the OEM emmissions equipment! Why would you use a Holley carb when the fuel injection gives you the best performance and driveability?????????????????????????

Think about the air our grandchildren are going to be breathing, and re-install all of you A.I.R equipment. Eventually, with tightening regulations, you'll be forced to anyway!

(All in fun, but this board has been a little militaristic lately...)

Re: motor swap, bigger cam. five7kid this is for you!

i got the car running, it runs good, sounds good, great throttle responce. it was a used cam, solid lift, so im not to sure its exactly that big. im sure its around 550 lift. the heads have slight port work. the intake and cam comes in around 2500, and im getting ready to swap transmissions. goin with a turbo 350, im hearing i will need a new drive shaft? can any 1 verify that? i know ill need a torque arm bracket. and a 2600 stall is goin in with it. the setup should work pretty well. i got the timing dialed in, and the carb is actually working pretty well. i dont think its a bad setup considering ive only got around 500 into it. im sure ill be asking more advice, and ill keep you guys posted. i need to throw up some pics for yall. all in all, im proud of myself so far.
