Easiest way to 500-600HP
Easiest way to 500-600HP
Been trying to figure out which would be the easiest and most cost effective way to dyno in the 500+ range in my 83 firebird. Been looking at building up a boosted 383 or 355, or just going with a 454. Buddy of mine says 454 and that I can get in 700+ later on if I want to boost it, but I'm worried about the amount of changes in the frontend to make it work.

The changes to the front end with a 454 install are peanuts compared to the changes you'll have to make behind the bell housing to withstand 600 HP.

A shot of NOS can do it with a SBC but it's easier to make high HP with more cubic inches. As mentioned above, it's not just about the engine but the entire drivetrain.

An all-forged 383 with 400 HP NA and a 200 shot would be 600 HP, right? Trans, rear, and chassis would have to be upgraded to withstand it.
You didn't say what you plan to do with all that spankability, but a 383 with that kind of NA power it'll still have decent street manners.

Yea its just going to be a street ride, thinking 383 with 200shot be fair considering I dont need 600 on the street just when I go to track. I just want to have something that is streetable but not afraid to take it out to the track.
I got a rebuilt Ford 9in and a T56 rated up to 800hp.

stock 10 bolt rear, mild rebuild 700r4 for 400-450hp/tq, 3600 stall. Car ran strong, never had a problem

I Don't want to steal a thread, but, I think this one is kind of an 'open-idea' sort of thread...
I'm shootin for 600+ in my Bird. Here's my dream set up... let me know what you honestly think.
http://www.jegs.com/p/Blueprint+Engines/761097/10002/-1
with the stock 350 TBI unit I already have combined with
http://www.spohn.net/shop/1982-1992-...nsmission.html
Couple that with Maybe 4.10 gears...? And add-ons like alum driveshaft, Weiand Stealth Intake, 3" exhaust with Dyno Max bullets, Adjustable FPR, AC delete, K&N 3" open element, and all those other goodies... Combined with Weight Reduction of around 250-350 lbs... And, Maybe later, set up for, like, 175-200 shot...I think I'm theoretically getting close to 550 hp?
Any comments are welcome. thanks

Re: Easiest way to 500-600HP
my cast 383 10.7:1 scr with edelbrock performer rpm heads, vic. jr, and lt headers put down 432rwhp thru a th350 3800 stall, dan 3.73 gear
assuming a 20% drivetrain loss, thats just under 550bhp on pump gas with hydraulic roller cam, cam was 238* duration
heads and intake are fs cheep

Re: Easiest way to 500-600HP
well i had about 6-7 nitrous passes on that rear, and only 2 of them were spraying off the line or atleast close to it
the other few were spraying half way in first gear at 4500 rpm or so, and i come off the line at 3800-4000 after the converter flashes. SO the 60's with that setup werent as hard on the rear as the full blown spray off the line runs. I was still doing 1.5's with nitrous spraying at 4500rpm in first compared to my other 1.55-1.61's on motor alone. Sprayed off the line (actually 3800, right when converter came up top) was 1.41 and 1.45. I am pretty confident it would have held a bunch more times tho. It held 10 or so passes on motor at 400whp and those 2 520ish whp spray runs plus that mix of 400 whp gradually increasing to 520ish whp runs.
I may be trying to push 700whp thru it with a stick this year before i get a 12 bolt or 9" rear. I want to try to be in the 9's with stock rear
I dont expect it to hold full power but if i baby it again to a 1.5x or so 60, i'll be fine i think
